Program #20661RJ
7 Days | 6 Nights
ACTIVITY LEVEL: Easy
While all of our learning adventures offer extraordinary value, our "Best Value" programs were rated by our participants themselves who thought their dollar went particularly far.
EasyFor people looking to exercise their minds more than their bodies. There’s minimal walking and not too many stairs.
ModerateThese programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.

This was my first Road's program and the first time I've attended an opera. I found the program and all the people involved to be simply superb in their planning, organization and care: the entire Simpson staff who took such good care of us, making sure our needs were met all week, our professor Dr Patterson who is a walking encyclopedia of opera facts, trivia, knowledge and talent, and a most wonderful sense of humor, the members and staff of the Des Moines Metro Opera who shared of their talents and skills through mini lectures and performances and presented the most wonderful operas in the evenings; I could go on and on. Hearing all about the various operas, then listening to them was a most joyful experience; I've been driving my friends crazy ever since as I talk on and on about the Iowa opera experience; and am trying to convince at least one of them to attend an opera with me in St Paul at the Ordway this season AND am also considering attending Road's Sarasota opera program in March. The Des Moines/Simpson College has opened a whole new world for me and I'm so grateful. And I found the other participants in this program to be a most fascinating group and so helpful as they shared of their own knowledge, love and passion for opera. It was simply a most enjoyable, inspiring program. I hope to return next July.

My husband chose this workshop for us. It was a wedding present from members of our church. To our mutual delight, our experience turned out to be so much fun and informative. We learned a great deal about opera and were blessed by our leaders and learning companions.

This outstanding program has many annual attendees. The Behind the Scenes classes presented by Dr. Patterson are fascinating due to his knowledge, talent, and experience. He answers questions during discussions, hosts guest speakers, and enhances our enjoyment of the operas because of his preparations and follow-up discussions. He and the other planners exceed expectations to make this opera week the superior event it is. An additional opera during this Des Moines Metro Opera week has tickets for sale. Free performances include a chamber music concert, The Stars of Tomorrow Concert and reception, an apprentice program, and still more activities with variations from year to year. An added pleasure this year was a tea featuring Dr. Patterson playing his compositions as he accompanied singers. He shared valuable information before performing, and the afternoon added much to our total experience. A lovely farewell dinner is an annual delight. This program always offers immense pleasure and leaves its participants looking forward to returning. The opera nights include pre-discussions, and the on-stage performances are magnificent on the unusual stage. New seats are comfortable, and there is handicapped accessibility. Having attended this opera program six consecutive years, I find it always offers additional knowledge, food for thought, and intrigue.
