If you are interested in the works of Dickens, whether you are a scholar or just a general reader, this program is for you. Participants range in age from high school students to senior citizens, and all are made to feel welcome. The beautiful setting of U. C. Santa Cruz is a delightful escape from urban living and freeway stress.

This was my 5th time at the Universe, and it was particularly excellent. Great discussions, lectures and fun teas and parties. I highly recommend it for any lover of literature

Wish I could claim 8 years! In fact, this was only my second year, but I love everything about this program, from the setting to the seminars and lectures, to the friends one makes!!!

This is actually my 8th year at this conference--my first as a Road Scholar. Of course I think it's wonderful or I wouldn't have gone back year after year. If you like to read and discuss what you've read you will love it here and if you aren't quite a Dickens believer, you will be when you're done. Some walking is required but the setting is gorgeous. Giant redwoods, the Pacific and tame deer. It's easy to make friends over Dickens.

Warning: this program is addictive. I have just returned for my eighth year. I have made friends I value, and each year is intellectually exciting. Some participants find it changes their lives: they abandon what they're doing, and go off to graduate school. If you like reading Dickens, this will give you an environment richer than your imagination could conceive.

The Dickens Universe is unique in the world. It is a week long and welcomes Dickens scholars from many other countries to join up with over 300 people to discuss the always fascinating Dickens works chosen, along with other authors of the 19th Century. The setting on the campus of UC Santa Cruz is beautiful, buildings set in redwoods where deer and other forest critters share the campus with you, where you are totally immersed in exploring new vistas in a multifaceted literary world for the entire day, each day. Interspersed are movies made from the books, entertainment by those who can bring the characters to life, high Victorian teas in the afternoons, wine and other "potations" before the evening's lecture, and many other delights--like an auction of relative objects for a fundraiser that is always rousing. If you love literature, you'll totally relish The Dickens Universe.

If you enjoy reading Charles Dickens, the Dickens Universe will be a week-long high for you.
