Road Scholar
Program #21170RJ
16 Days | 15 Nights
EasyFor people looking to exercise their minds more than their bodies. There’s minimal walking and not too many stairs.
ModerateThese programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.

Our time on MS Expedition was wonderful, and made easier by the fact that staff had to be able to speak English. Our group of 10 was a small part of the participant base, and there were travelers from places other than North America, which made it more interesting for me. The lectures and films were, for the most part, very good. The food was good--too good for me to step on the scales for a few days. There was no shortage of wildlife to be enjoyed. As it states in the description, weather and sea conditions can necessitate adjustments to landing sites, but the Expedition Leader found us great places to land and his enthusiasm was infectious. If Antarctica is on your bucket list, consider the longer trip that crosses the Polar Circle. Traveling through icebergs and frozen sea ice adds to the excitement, and the landscape you see is very different from further north. This was also the only area we saw Orca. We didn't take our trekking poles, because we only use them occasionally on hikes, but several icy climbs and descents would have been much easier if we had. We found our cabins were often too warm, so take a few short-sleeved shirts to cope with this. The Drake Passage was fairly rough on the outward journey. People who are prone to motion sickness should start their meds in advance, not when they are already feeling ill when it is a bit too late. Some people spent 2 days in their cabins because of this. I experimented with the patch before I left to be sure I didn't have side effects I couldn't tolerate, but am one of the lucky ones for whom Bonine (meclizine) was enough.

Kudos to Road Scholar and G Adventures for conducting this outstanding learning adventure! The hikes and zodiac cruises with views of ubiquitous penguins and ice in various hues and configurations made for an unforgetable experience. Though at times the sea and weather conditions caused us to change our plans, the knowledgeable staff nontheless provided worthwhile alternative activities. Likewise, the ship's crew did a stellar job of maintaining our cabins, serving marvelous meals, and entertaining us. Since returning home I have recommended this fantastic Road Scholar program to a number of friends.

G Adventures were perfect. They sought out the best landing places always ensuring safety. Food and lectures were tops. The boat handled our every need and a Road Scholr representative was nice to have but not necessary. One suggestions is improved check in at hotels prior to trip. Long waits and forms to be filled out could have been done more efficiently by Road Schlor staff.

The MS Expedition staff was exceptional! Our shore excursion, the scenery, the birds...all amazing. The trip of a lifetime!

This was about as perfect as a trip could be, thanks to our knowledgeable and caring RS leader and G Adventures with their outstanding expedition staff, crew, and accommodations. You truly felt you were on an expedition, dependent upon the weather and conditions, to determine where and when you could anchor. But, it didn’t matter where we landed since the penguins were waiting to greet us at every site! Unlike some of the earlier feedback, I found this trip especially easy because at each landing we were able to hang around and move along at our own pace rather than keep up with a group. I would suggest that in planning to go, think about what aspect of penguin life, seals and whales you prefer (if you have a preference). The timing of this trip featured mating, nesting, and some egg laying, few seals, and no whales.

This is an intense program that will take you out of your everyday world to high adventure, incredible beauty and nonstop fun. This was truly a peak experience, and made us eager for more expeditions to far away places. Two suggestions: bring trekking poles and if you have any fitting problems with high boots, invest in a pair of wellingtons for yourself. Feeling sure footed will allow you to enjoy the landings to the maximum.

This trip was in a word, AWESOME! Antarctica was not like I imagined and every day provided a new experience. The trip was visually and intellectually stimulating. The Expedition and Road Scholar crew and staff were attentive, responsive and safety vigilant. I also concur with Deborah's comment that the trip demands physical agility and good balance.

Visiting Antarctica with Road Scholar and G Adventures was an uplifting, extraordinary, beautifully incredible and emotional experience. Meeting fellow travelers who hold many of the same desires and goals was a treat! The program was exceptionally well done; the staff and crew, the lectures, the landings all were wonderful. I would love to go again, to see the blue icebergs, the penguins waddling right up to us, riding in the bouncing zodiaks, being surrounded by such an exquisite environment. This is a trip to remember forever.

If you are like us and interested in roads less traveled, or in this case seas infrequently sailed, take this Road Scholar trip aboard the MS Expedition... the Antarctic is a place beyond dreams.

The ship's program was excellent with many landings and excellent lectures. The food was good and plentiful. Just remember that this is a physically demanding trip and a walking stick would have been very helpful

Outstanding. The ship staff, the dedicated and knowledgeable excursion leaders, the insightful lectures, and our truly excellent Road Scholar leader, Peter Alden, all factored into making this the trip of a lifetime. The zodiac trips ashore to visit penguin colonies, the treks in snow (new to this Florida gal) all cozily bundled up against the cold—never to be forgotten! Truly well worth the effort and the cost.

This trip was amazing! Standing on the continent of Antarctica was a dream come true! Everyone working on the boat did a first class job! Our instructor, Peter Alden, made the trip truly great! He was so smart, and had a wonderful sense of humor! This trip was difficult, due to the Drake Sea, and physically challenging, but it was well worth it!

This is the trip of a lifetime, made so not only by virtue of the sites visited, but also by the competence and knowledge of the staff. It is physically demanding, but worth the effort and cost.
