Road Scholar
Program #20644RJ
11 Days | 10 Nights
ACTIVITY LEVEL: Moderate
While all of our learning adventures offer extraordinary value, our "Best Value" programs were rated by our participants themselves who thought their dollar went particularly far.
EasyFor people looking to exercise their minds more than their bodies. There’s minimal walking and not too many stairs.
ModerateThese programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.
If you’re looking for a more flexible schedule with ample independent time and several meals on your own, then our FLEX learning adventures are made for you.

The trip to the low country was worth ever penny, including the vegetarian diets that we were on. Our leaders were gracious, warm and extremely understanding even though we had a large group. I did feel that more effort should be given to the history of American Indians and the African Americans. It always appears that history is told by those in power and that still is apparent in the history of the south. The local people we met were extremely kind. The southern hospitality is still alive a well. The last presentation was by far the most informative about the hidden aspects of a life of people who were enslaved or indentured which ever you choose to use as a term to represent that time in history. We would recommend this trip for anyone. no matter their age. Road Scholar has a real place in our education system and should be in the radar of more age groups. GREAT TRIP GREAT PEOPLE

It was a great trip--cultural, historical, and culinary. Loved the low country cuisine. Tom and Janet were excellent group leaders. I give it a 5 out of 5. Ray

I would have no problem suggesting this tour to anyone. Well planned and executed. However, if you want to shop, go to malls, this is not the tour for you. If you want to learn, try it out. Do your homework before leaving home.

TOM AND JANET MURRAY WERE AMAZING LEADERS. ACTIVITY LEVEL MODERATE WAS RIGHT ON THE BUTTON FOR ME. AT 86 AND HAVING WALKING PROBLEMS, I WAS ABLE TO KEEP UP WITH THE GROUP AND ENJOY THE PROGRAM AND WAS EDUCATED ABOUT THE AMAZING SOUTH. THANK YOU gINNY HALL.

This was an enlightening and entertaining trip to the "low country" of SC and GA with varied experiences in significant cities, the countryside plantations and on barrier islands. We thoroughly enjoyed it despite having visited both Charleston and Savannah previously. We learned much more on this trip!

The Low Country Shrimp Boil cooking demonstration, savory meal afterward, and Gullah Ring Shouters were a perfect finale to ten days of terrific immersion in Southern plantation culture. The graciousness of our tour leaders and the people of Charleston, Savannah, Beaufort, and Jeckyll Island added up to a memorable experience in a region that has interested me since reading authors celebrating their roots.

Ruth Miller was the best part of the trip!

This was our first Road Scholar adventure and we enjoyed it very much. Tom and Janet Murray couldn't have been any better! Lodgings in Charleston and Jekyll Island were wonderful, but would have liked something more historic in Savannah. Also, I found 40 people a bit cumbersome for touring. Would have enjoyed a smaller group even more. All said, it was an enjoyable trip. Patsy in California

I highly recommend this program for the history, the food, and the locations. Highly diverse. However, I think the group was too large for walking around.
