If you would like the experience of seeing the historical residence of the patients who lived in the remote colony which was home of thousands of Hanson's Disease, come and experience Road Scholar's Molakai program. The people who live and work there will welcome and enlighten you. The sights such as the northern cliffs will astound you. An authentic luau will entertain you royally.

Molokai! It's not only a classroom, but a bastion of traditional Hawaiian culture and values. Having returned to live in the islands a bit over a year ago, I've been wondering where to look for the lovely and loving traditions I experienced while living in the state in the 1980s. They are largely missing here in Waikiki where I live. But thanks to the staff at the Molokai Museum, road scholars can access and observe those cultural practices, ranging from home cooked luau foods, to hibiscus propagation, nene conservation, sea salt preparation, and taro cultivation. We also saw a Hawaiian language immersion school, spoke with a Pearl Harbor survivor who literally wrote the book on the history of hula in the state, and with one of only two female members of the 1976 crew of the original Hokulea (Polynesian voyaging canoe). The day trip to Kalaupapa National Historical Park was moving and memorable. This program is one for the bucket list!
