Road Scholar
Program #1423RJ
6 Days | 5 Nights
ACTIVITY LEVEL: Easy
Road Scholar has thousands of educational adventures to choose from. A good way to narrow down our list is to browse our collection of "Most Popular" programs.
See all of our Most Popular programs.
EasyFor people looking to exercise their minds more than their bodies. There’s minimal walking and not too many stairs.
ModerateThese programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.

This program was my introduction to Road Scholar, and I enjoyed every minute of it. The historic connection between Bertha Palmer and the Art Institute made the Palmer House Hilton the perfect choice for comfortable and convenient accommodations. Lucas Livingston, docents and Road Scholar volunteers were gracious hosts to the participants. The gallery talks gave me a greater appreciation for the art and artists presented, and led to further discoveries. An added bonus was having sufficient time to meet and converse with fellow attendees. This won’t be my last Road Scholar experience.

I am a professional artist and came hoping to broaden my knowledge of what "came before". I left wanting more and plan to participate in more art education based programs. The ease of moving through the week with comfort, learning and meeting some exceptional people on the way was outstanding.

The Art Institute has wonderfully intelligent folks sharing their knowledge, but the great art captures one's soul. I came for the Japanese Edo period block prints, but my eyes loved so much more! Every person with whom I came in contact was kind. Thank you to all.

Being new to solo travel and Road Scholar (trip #2), I was very pleased with this informative and interesting program. Lucas, our leader, was not only knowledgeable and organized but also friendly and kind. He was attuned to those participants needing wheelchairs and in accommodating their needs without making them feel self conscious. Every docent/presenter was excellent and obviously knowledgeable about his/her specific presentation. A BIG bonus was the special exhibit "Magritte-The Mystery of the Ordinary." Being a Road Scholar, I was able to attend a "members only" lecture and also to walk back through the exhibit at my leisure. The Palmer House was another special treat with hospitality and food in abundance. This trip was worth every penny of the cost! I am looking forward to returning to Chicago for the program focusing on the Impressionist collection at the Art Institute.

This is a wonderful "survey course" of highlights of the Art Institute including their world-famous Impressionist collection and stellar Modern art collection. There is also ample free time to take a walking tour of architectural highlights, spend an evening at the Chicago Symphony, and even visit the Lyric Opera.

Learning more about art how been so helpful for me. Even at my age I love to learn and that is why I have been to a lot of Road Scholar programs AND plan to continue to travel with Road Scholar.

If you are stimulated by viewing and discussing art, learning about a beautiful and vibrant city and meeting others with similar interests, go!

The Chicago Art Institute exceeded my expectations including the help of Lucas Livingston, the volunteers and docents. Most important were the friends I met and connected with. Bravo Road Scholar.

This experience is great for those who want to learn about the art they see in galleries, particularly to bring it into focus. The hotel used is a mast work of historical architecture itself and adds to the fun. The opportunity to go to a chicago Symphone performance was an added pleasure.

This is an amazing opportunity to visit one of the best museums- the Chicago Art Institute. A week is not nearly enough. From the first day to the last we were challenged, instructed and made to feel part of a team. Many thanks Road Scholar for such an experience in such a vibrant, exciting city.

The perfect introduction or review of the Art Institute's collection. Wonderful speakers and early entrance to the museum before the general public each day was a real treat.

Debbie from Albany, CA Number of programs attended: 1

This was my first Road Scholar trip. I have enviously watched my mother and her sister attend numerous trips, including a river cruise in Russia last summer. As am I an Art & Music librarian, the idea of spending 5 days getting to know the Art Institute was a wonderful draw. Lecturers were knowledgeable, personable and good at getting our group engaged in discussion. Group leader Lucas did a great job, and I can't imagine a better place to stay than the Palmer House, which even has a good-sized pool. The optional field trip to hear Beethoven's Missa Solemnis with the CSO and Haitink was exceptional- what an ethereal, elegant take on this huge and incredibly moving piece!. The excellent handouts provided travelers with a nice orientation to the many great things to do and places to explore within walking distance. Palmer House cuisine was great, too! All in all, a fabulous trip.

Three of us came from Los Angeles. We thoroughly enjoyed the week at the Chicago Art Institute. Two of us have been docents at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and found the lectures stimulating and fun. I personally would like to return for the Impressionist program. A great experience!
