What could better evoke true memories for some . . . and for others, keen visions of the past in the beautiful West Virginia Mountains than riding the old Appalachian rail lines pulled by the restored original coal and diesel fired engines? In all our railroading activities and adventures, our company of fellow Road Scholars shared a lively common interest! We got to meet and know the actual engineers, firemen, brakemen and dining car cooks and waiters. And we met the most remarkable and delightful licensed train conductor in North America (a true distinction for a young woman who is still currently a college student)! The most excellent lecturers and the truly outstanding singers and musicians were applauded loud and long during our evenings of entertainment. The history and actual operating trains of several old West Virginia railroads are exceptionally well preserved and the tour of the National Radio Astronomy Observatory and Green Bank Telescope was an outstanding field trip!

A delightful program for anyone who loves train travel and wants to know more about some of the earliest train engines and cars.

You don't have to be a rail buff to enjoy this program. My wife and I just enjoy riding trains. The rail experts in our group were very willing to share their knowledge, and that enhanced the experience. The group leaders were well organized and knowledgeable. They were eager to introduce us to West Virginia and Appalachia, and they did a superb job of doing so.

I have now attended 21 Road Scholar programs. In addition to the scenery, etc, this one was the best organized and "conducted" of of all. (I am enrolled in two more Road Scholar programs fort next summer.)

This was an excellent program with fine railroad excursions. I was particularly pleased with the inclusion of live musical concerts on three occasions. The participants were both interesting and very friendly. I highly recommend this adventure.

If you don't know much about West Virginia and the history and people of Appalachia, and I didn't, this is and excellent experience and program to get acquainted. And extra bonus was the weather and scenery at this time of year.

The stars of this Road Scholar excursion are the steam trains. We were given so many photo opportunities on both the moving engines and static displays. The best event was a drive by so that everyone could get a wonderful picture of the train flying by them in full steam. The trip to the Radio Astronomy site was fascinating, but there was a side effect in that cells phones don't work for most of the week. Some found this an advantage, others not so much. This was a very large group, but the legendary organization skills of Linda and Jamie ensured that everyone had a wonderful experience.

This was a unique opportunity to learn about mountain railroading, tree harvesting, hardships and dangers that the West Virginia people faced and overcame. A truly gripping story that made me proud to be an American in their debt. The coal miners story was not covered here.

An outstanding program, very well organized and a very good value.
