See our Small Group programs.
EasyFor people looking to exercise their minds more than their bodies. There’s minimal walking and not too many stairs.
ModerateThese programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.
Charles from Winston Salem, NC Number of programs attended: 9
Date attended: 10/20/13 - 10/25/13
Everything was great: content, presentation, location, food, participants, and cost.

George from Dacula, GA Number of programs attended: 16
Date attended: 10/20/13 - 10/25/13
A great program but be warned that the Mountain Lake facility has many stairs (no elevator) and that classrooms are on the lower level.

Sally from Lexington, VA Number of programs attended: 2
Date attended: 09/15/13 - 09/20/13
This is a very substantial program in a beautiful location!

Krista from Pittsburgh, PA Number of programs attended: 56
Date attended: 10/21/12 - 10/26/12
High level of academic expertise
Variety of activities: lectures, experience with colored lenses used in research,
holding varieties of meteors, beautiful photographs and films of the universe,
and looking through telescopes to see the sun moon, planets, stars as well as nebula.
Excellent meal options,
Very nice rooms and bath attached (without luxurious extravagance)
I have been on over 50 Elderhostels and this has to rank in the top 5!

As a retired teacher, I can be very critical of presentations.
This was the highest trained academic group that I have experienced on an Elder Hostel. It was pure intellectual pleasure! My brain cells were exhausted - but
very enthusiastic - at the week's end.

I really enjoyed the week at the Mountain Hotel. Of course getting up the road was an experience all by itself. The grounds were beautiful with many trails and paved walks.
My fellow attendees were great fun to be with and the food was outstanding, but a lunch menu (or tags on the buffet) would have helped. Most of the programs were informative, but I do have to admit, I napped during two of them as I felt they were way over my head. I am not a particle physisist and did not understand exactly what the instructor was talking about. It was unfortunate I could not take advantage of the trip to the observatory, but there were just too many stairs. The nights under the stars were great. The telescopes that were set up enabled us to see parts of the universe we do not get to see even on a clear starry night. Thanks for the great experience.

Howard from Holbrook, NY Number of programs attended: 8
Date attended: 10/21/12 - 10/26/12
The universe is a fascinating subject but more so is how it was formed, how it is evolving and what impact will there be upon our own tiny solar system.

Tommy from Charlottesville, VA Number of programs attended: 13
Date attended: 10/21/12 - 10/26/12
Astronomy, The Universe and Beyond has excellent material presented by very knowledgeable Professors who are adept in using visual aids. Both the novice and the Astronomy student would learn much and enjoy looking into the sky at this Road Scholar Adventure Event.

Earl from Richmond, VA Number of programs attended: 5
Date attended: 10/21/12 - 10/26/12
