See our Small Group programs.
EasyFor people looking to exercise their minds more than their bodies. There’s minimal walking and not too many stairs.
ModerateThese programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.

Road Scholar is a gem for allowing my age group of seniors to continue learning, meet interesting people and extend my wings of knowledge.

While the East Coast sweltered in the July heat wave, 13 Road Scholars stayed cool and dry atop Salt Pond Mountain at Mountain Lake Lodge. What a great way to spend a week, learning about all things Appalachian: the flora and fauna, history, culture, folklore, music, literature, and art. Beautiful setting, engaging presenters, wonderful leaders, delightful group – I missed seeing them all at breakfast the morning after we departed from our Appalachian Experience.

A great balance of activities encompassing the region. I was enthralled by the knowledge and passion of the speakers for their native Appalachia. I came away wanting to read more poems and novels written by natives. I was so impressed by the beauty of the mountain and the creativity of the people. The porch jam was great fun as well as the banjo player the puppet dancers! This was my first experience but there will be more

A Week of Mountain Lore at the Feet of the Masters--those who live it and learned it here in Appalachia. It is a chance to butt heads with and perhaps bow to Mountain Magic. Inexorable experience.
