This program was a wonderful experience. You don't need kayaking experience as the guides are helpful, knowledgeable and accommodating for all levels of ability. We had a great time, enjoying nature and learning about the intrepid explorers of the Lewis and Clark Expedition and Chinook people.

A memorable blend of good days of kayaking, ecology and culture of a once vibrant and historically rich location, following the trail of November-1805-misery of the Corps of Discovery by paddle and foot, excellent topical music two nights and two nights of enlightening lectures: highly recommended. Some kayaking experience would enhance your enjoyment. Days of rain may hamper a good experience. We lucked out and had no rain at all! Excellent guides, locally sources and thoughtfully prepared food; accommodations comfortable and centrally located, minimizing commuting time, interesting company. Local goat creamery makes excellent goat cheese, dessert cheeses and spreads -- ask at the resort to keep a fresh batch at their store. A big bonus for us was discovery that our Road Scholar dollars are helping to revive the economy of this beautiful town through the efforts of younger people trying to develop a viable economy for themselves and their community.

If you enjoy meeting people from many walks of life and many parts of the country (countries) , enjoy getting out in the fresh air and being guided by very professional people, check out this program. If you have kayaked at all, this is for you. The scenery is great, food super and as a 55+ person, it's wonderful to return to your own bed each evening (as apart from moving camp to camp). The evening lectures and entertainment were "icing on the cake". Great value for the cost.

Vera from St. Louis, MO Number of programs attended: 1

This was a great trip. Several of us were new to kayaking and several were more experienced. I think everyone had a great time. The guides were fun, knowledgeable and good teachers. Food was very good. Highly recommended.

What a great trip! Andrew, Levi and Katy were wonderful guides, personable, knowledgeable and patient.
It was my first kayaking adventure, and my first time doing a group program. I'm usually a solo traveler, but enjoyed our "band of adventurers." Keep up the good work Road Scholar!

I woke up Saturday morning and it just didn't feel right. I already missed our jolly band. Judy - North Bend

Richard from North Bend, OR Number of programs attended: 3
Date attended: 05/24/15 - 05/29/15
Andrew is the anchor of this program. His wide leadership skills, kayaking, music, flora & fauna are superb. The catered food is fine, the lodgings comfortable and clean. Our group of 13 meshed well and seemed to enjoy each other as well as the program. Highly recommend this program to anyone who would like to kayak with a group.

Patricia from Delta, BC Number of programs attended: 1

The Kayaking Adventure on the Columbia River conducted through roadscholar and Columbia River Kayaking was exceptional. The whole experience was fun and invigorating and I would highly recommend it to anyone interested in the pursuit of an active educational program. As a novice kayaker who questioned my own ability to be able to "keep up "it was well paced and very safe. I'd do it again in a heartbeat

Marlene from Vancouver, BC Number of programs attended: 2
Date attended: 05/24/15 - 05/29/15
Thank you Andrew, Levi & Katy for a truly memorable, fun and absolutely enjoyable kayaking "adventure". I can't say enough positive things about you and the program. The kayaking was great, the accommodation couldn't have been lovelier (who wouldn't love having the Columbia River literally at your doorstep?) and I now have a deep appreciation for the history of that part of Washington. You made Lewis & Clark come alive. Thank you for a truly memorable (and more than likely do again) week!

Sandy from Loveland, CO Number of programs attended: 4
Date attended: 04/26/15 - 05/01/15
This was our 5th trip with Road Scholar and it was great! We enjoyed the kayaking voyages, the evening programs and the excursion to coast. Hearing the local history of Lewis & Clark and their expedition was interesting. We enjoyed seeing a western painted turtle and Columbia white tail deer in the preserve. We also enjoyed meeting all the participants on the trip.

Carolyn from Grants Pass, OR Number of programs attended: 6
Date attended: 04/26/15 - 05/01/15
This was the fifth RS program I’ve taken in the past 5 years, the closest to home, and so much more than I had even hoped for! The blend of professionalism, knowledge, scenery & safety while kayaking made learning fun for this newbie. The comfortable and varied schedule flowed perfectly, each day building on the one before. Learning about the area through quotes from Lewis & Clark's journals, an outstanding local historian, delightful humor and incredible musicians playing and singing songs about the area made me want to come back to the tiny town of Skamokawa! I played “A Portrait of Place...Songs of the Columbia-Pacific Region" the entire drive home and continue to listen and join in, remembering this delightful gem of a program.

Katherine from Crestline, CA Number of programs attended: 1

This is a wonderful program! The kayaking guides are knowledgeable, interesting, enthusiastic, very helpful, and patient. I enjoyed every minute---kayaking on the beautiful Columbia River, the great evening programs and music, talking with fellow travelers, learning about the history of the area, the delicious food. This was my first Road Scholar program but it won't be my last!

William from Austin, TX Number of programs attended: 24
Date attended: 04/26/15 - 05/01/15
Of the 26 outstanding Road Scholar programs I've attended, this is the only one I've attended twice. The kayaking, regardless of your experience level, is great. The opportunity to learn about the Lewis and Clark Expedition and the natural habitat of the Lower Columbia River is excellent. And the live music performances are wonderful.

Stephanie from Granite Bay, CA Number of programs attended: 1

My husband and I are from CA and are frequent travelers, however this was our first Road Scholar experience. And we can't wait to do another! We enjoyed everything about it! We also were very lucky to have perfect weather! Being novice kayakers we were pleased with the terrific guides we had who patiently helped us with our gear, kayaks, paddling lessons, and paddling with the tidal schedules! They were fun, accessable, professional and very knowledgeable about the area and history! Our accomodations were fabulous, our hosts warm, accomodating, and great cooks, and our rooms beautiful and cozy! I can truly say this is one of the best vacations we have ever had! I can't wait to do another active adventure with Road Scholar. This one has "set the bar pretty high!"

Jane from Buffalo, NY Number of programs attended: 2

Kayaking the Lower Columbia River was truly an extraordinary experience from beginning to end! The adventure was fine tuned and never missed a beat. The Inn at Crippen Creek provided a wonderful home away from home and the Columbia River Kayaking guides were beyond exceptional. What a fabulous way to explore the great Northwest Territory. As always, the people enrolled in this program were a wonderful blend of fun loving, adventurers who immediately became friends. I would highly recommend this program and I am confident that you will not be disappoited.

Kathy from Schenectady, NY Number of programs attended: 1

I would highly recommend this program to everyone I speak to. The guides Andrew, Levi and Katie were awesome. They are what made the program the best experience of my life and make me look forward to my next adventure. Don and Kitty were warm welcoming and kind. And the food they prepared was delicious. They welcomed us into their home and made us all feel more like good friends than guests at their lovely B and B.

Ginger from Colorado Spgs, CO Number of programs attended: 3

History, bald eagles, banana slugs, sparkling waters, misty mornings- we had it all. Evenings filled with delicious food, fascinating programs and musical entertainment that included banjos. What a wonderful trip! I love sight seeing from a kayak feeling close (but not too close) to the water.

Linda from Kirkland, WA Number of programs attended: 2
Date attended: 10/05/14 - 10/10/14
My experience on the lower Columbia River kayaking trip will keep me coming back to Road Scholar numerous times in the hope of recapturing the same sense of excitement, adventure, community - pure joy! Linda

A fabulous, physically challenging outdoor program on the lower Columbia River, one of America's truly great wonders. An exciting surprise is that we were following some of the final river journey of Lewis & Clark as their expedition neared the Pacific Ocean. I am in good health, 70+, but not athletically fit nor a very experienced kayaker. I could keep up with the group (the oldest participant was 80+), but it was a work-out. I eagerly look forward to another opportunity.

Allen from Phoenix, AZ Number of programs attended: 2

A fun trip with interesting people. The guides were knowledgeable, interesting and always helpful. And the location with its scenery was perfect. I wish it had lasted several days longer. The evening programs were always interesting and relevant. I was not sure what to expect from the evening music programs, but Andrew, I really liked them and your groups were great (yes, a cello is a wonderful sound that complements banjos, guitars, mandolins, mandocello (?) and auto harps nicely).

Beverly from East Hanover, NJ Number of programs attended: 6

I've been on 6-7 Road Scholar programs - and this, by far, is the best one. Our leaders were caring and knowledgeable. The lectures and entertainment after kayaking were wonderful. I highly recommend this program to anyone who enjoys the great outdoors.

I just returned from the most WONDERFUL 4 days. I am a novice kayaker and have dreamed of doing a trip along the Lewis and Clark trail. This trip was truly a lifetime experience. The Columbia River Kayaking company knows their stuff. The owners Andrew and Mark are jewels to experience. The B&b's beyond compare. To take on a new sport at the age of 74 and come away feeling like I can walk on water is so Special. Thank You Road Scholar.

Andrew and Mark were the best guides ever on the Columbia River trip. They were were helpful, patient, flexible, very knowledge, entertaining, multi-talented, delightful guides. The equipment was new and well fitted to the participants. They easily accommodated various levels of kayaking experience. They had a wealth of information.

Carol from Seattle, WA Number of programs attended: 10
Date attended: 09/15/13 - 09/20/13
Excellent in all respects. Mark and Andrew and Katy were the best of all possible guides for kayaking on the river, noting with great care the changing tides, winds, and currents. The accommodations were delightful and the food especially delicious and nourishing. To top it all off, there were two evenings of music portraying the Lewis and Clark era and the Lower Columbia area. It all seemed rather magical.

David from Mount Airy, NC Number of programs attended: 7
Date attended: 09/15/13 - 09/20/13
If you can only take one kayaking trip, this should be the one! We've been to 5 others and Skamokawa is the only one we've chosen to repeat.

Susan from Palo Alto, CA Number of programs attended: 3
Date attended: 09/01/13 - 09/06/13
This was a very rich, kayaking trip! The information about Lewis and Clark Expedition was presented in a way that was interesting and relevant. The accommodations were comfortable and the food was outstanding! The kayaking averaged 4-6 hours on 3 days. The trips were well planned with the tides and winds. Andrew and Mark are very knowledgeable. The evening programs were great! I highly recommend this trip to people who love nature and the history of the area.

Renee from Seattle, WA Number of programs attended: 2
Date attended: 09/01/13 - 09/06/13
This is an exceptional program that exceeded all my expectations. Besides all the kayaking fun, the local history and Lewis and Clark historical information was presented in a creative and entertaining way by very talented leaders and local historians and musicians.

Christine from Tucson, AZ Number of programs attended: 1
Date attended: 08/18/13 - 08/23/13
Kayaking in the Lower Coumbia River is an exeptionlly rewarding program. I participated in the general program, not the advanced, and can't say enough to recommend the guides and the experience. Go for it!

The program "Kayaking the Lower Columbia River" was my first experience with Road Scholar and it was a wonderful experience. the paddling part was leisurely, the guides were very helpful and patient. Their knowledge knows no bounds and their talents are amazing. (I am 79). definitely a 5 star program.

Katherine from Normandy Park, WA Number of programs attended: 1

This was a truly rich experience, weaving the history of the Lewis and Clark Exhibition with water travel on the Columbia, nature study, informative music programs, and just plain fun. The fabulous guides do a STELLAR job of making this truly a quality experience; I am a teacher by trade and very particular about instructors; Andrew and Mark are teachers in the true sense of the word and I found myself excited about every aspect of this program's learning. I am a fifty-eight year old who shared this with my 87 year old dad; we both returned from the week inspired and smiling. After the week was over, it was clear to both of us that we had participated in something great! You can't miss on this one.

Penny from La Mesa, CA Number of programs attended: 15
Date attended: 06/30/13 - 07/05/13
This is so much more than an expertly run kayak trip using the ultimate in quality gear. It is a cultural, botanical, historical and musical extravaganza lead by guides who know how to have fun and to connect with each individual in a group. All details of lodging, food and activities were first rate and Andrew's and Mark's expertise in kayak safety reassuring, though not needed in real time. I was fortunate to be able to enjoy this trip in 1999, its first year, and could not wait to share it with my adult daughter this time when it was even better. You will not be disappointed.
