ModerateThese programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.

excellent way to enjoy opera, santa Fe, and meet new friends. A very good value in every way.

Oliver Prezant is definitely the best presenter of opera related material I ever encountered. I really enjoyed the lectures and learned a great deal. The Santa Fe Hilton was a good choice of hotel, because of its location within walking distance of the center of town. As always, with Road Scholar, there were many interesting participants.

August 2014. If you enjoy opera performed and sung and staged in the most ideal of settings, and if you enjoy being with other people around your age who love to see and to talk about the same things, and if you enjoy morning opera lectures and casual discussions with one of the smartest and most entertaining teachers you'll ever have (Oliver Prezant), and if you just want to fall back and relax into a nice hotel for a week and be served good meals (in this case at The Lodge at Santa Fe) and have your days organized in the most efficient and comfortable manner (in this case by Kay Barber, the Group Leader), and if you love being taken to museums in the afternoons and to an opera every night--if you like everything on that long list, you simply can't find a better way to spend a week than in Santa Fe in August with Road Scholar and its "Opera Extravaganza: The Santa Fe Opera Festival Season." This was my second trip to this program and my third will occur, for sure, next August. Curt, from Illinois

We enrolled in this program for the second time and were not disappointed.Oliver Prezant's lectures every morning are a treat and they gave us access to each of the operas in a very special way. Each opera became a culturally enriching experience. We were very pleased with the change in accommodations. The Lodge at Santa Fe is quite welcoming and comfortable, with a nice pool. Meals were well prepared and varied. Our group leader, Kay Barber did everything she possibly could to make our stay pleasant and successful Even bought the New York Times in the morning and put it on the breakfast table. The participants were just that: a highly knowledgeable group of individuals who kept the discussion at a high level with lots of energy. Certainly a program to recommend.Hendrik and Mieke Smit

Santa Fe opera for 5 nights with morning lectures by Oliver Prezant is THE thing to do for opera lovers of every level.

The opera "Dr. Sun Yat Sen" far exceeded my expectations. All aspects of the perfect opera were met at the highest level. It seems the audience withheld applause until the end, not wanting to distract from the pathos of the story. It was then they burst into a thunderous reaction with many "bravos" to punctuate the appreciation of an excellent production.

What a superior experience this "opera extravaganza" was! Yes, the five operas in five perfectly beautiful nights were fabulous; but equally memorable were the service and guidance provided by our Road Scholar guide, and our lecturer, and our bus driver, and our hotel staff, for our six nights. Lectures about the night's opera began after breakfast; tours to key museums in Santa Fe and Los Alamos and backstage at the opera filled the afternoons; and after dinner at the hotel, the bus was waiting to take us back to the opera house for more music. Such a schedule may not be for everybody--but the 42 of us in this group were very, very happy.

For anyone who enjoys opera, and in a unique setting, this is the program to book, especially if both the tour director and the lecturer are the same. It was total musical immersion and no one had to drive, take a train, take a taxi or hire a limo to take oneself there! And with the city of Santa Fe thrown in!

Opera Santa Fe: A wonderful introduction to opera with top notch music and instruction about the operas seen, placing them in musical, historical and social context. Great group of people and very interesting side trips.

This was a wonderful week at the opera; we attended fully briefed by Oliver Prezant's lectures, so our understanding and appreciation of the productions were multiplied. The productions were excellent, with a week of great variety and talent. Bravi! Pat is an excellent coordinator, and, well, the hotel's food . . . but, then, we weren't there for the meals. See you next year!

there should be a method to copy a participant's evaluation form.

This was our seoond year at Santa Fe Opera. The hotel has deteriorated somewhat. The grout in the bathroom floor was coming loose and the food was not nearly as good as the previous year. But, all else was great. Oliver's lectures were gems We missed all of his lectures at the opera house because we don't leave the hotel early enough. Why not move up dinner 15 minutes and leave 30 minutes earlier? Mark, the program director was very considerate and attentive: good job! If a better hotel can't be found, maybe a "program only" option should be offered. Seats at the opera were great.

The program was outstanding with a fabulous lecturer, interesting field trips, great fellow participants, very helpful group leader. The food and accomodations need some improvement but this is not a reason to forego this wonderful trip if you love opera and want to learn more.

I am recently retired and was delighted to be able to attend opera outside local season. Accommodations in Santa Fe were OK, opera theater is spectacular, and I enjoyed all 5 operas. The 3 hour presentations each morning by Oliver Prezant were worth the cost of the program. Thanks to Oliver's engaging and insightful presentations, my pleasure of each opera was at least doubled.

I am 87 years old and have traveled to many parts of the world. I am also an opera fan who has never been as well prepared and thrilled as I was in Santa Fe because of the remarkable classes conducted by Oliver. Bravo!

We were fortunate to have The Marriage of Figaro as our last opera. The end of the 18th century brought major changes and Mozart's spirited interpretation of the disappearance of Le Droit du Seigneur illustrates that beautifully. Without Oliver's guidance we might not have realized that this opera, with its emotional and moral message, is one of the great, high moments of Western Culture. To be able to enjoy it at the Santa Fe opera house, on a very soft and serene evening, made it a deep and lasting experience. Mieke Smit

Absolutely great program for opera lovers; presentations by Oliver Prezant were superior, easily understood, created great discussions and enthusiasm in addition to giving us many "Ah-ha!" moments to recognize in the operas; Group leader Mark Utgaard was professional, friendly, had a sense of humor, was accessible to all, and respectfully accommodated anyone with a disability. Accommodations and food were average but adequate. However, this is absolutely a high quality program at a very reasonable price.

Wow. What a great week. Five operas in the most amazing venue (the Santa Fe Opera House). Daily field trips to interesting locales. Superb music education instruction each day by Oliver P. and top-notch group support by Mark. U. The hotel is beautiful and clean although perhaps not optimally positioned for the locations of some of the activities. The meals/food were a bit lacking in terms of the quality and selection I'd prefer --- but this was also not a program about cuisine. All in all --- a genuine value and a tremendously satisfying learning and social experience, as well. I'll be back again, soon.
