See all of our Most Popular programs.
EasyFor people looking to exercise their minds more than their bodies. There’s minimal walking and not too many stairs.
ModerateThese programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.

Both the morning and afternoon presentations were of high quality, and the invited lecturer for our group provided valuable perspectives on hunger issues. The Road Scholar group was one of the best I have experienced. Chautauqua itself is a wonderful environment.

Outstanding experience and a great value. The participants were friendly, smart and engaged. The leaders went out of the way to provide guidance and activities. Can't wait for my next trip with Road Scholars as I embark on my retirement

This program was Utopia, Disney World and Summer Camp for intelligent, inquisitive adults all in one package! I hope to return to CHQ with Road Scholar in the years to come. The program made access to the programs and meals almost effortless, allowing me to use my time to enjoy the lectures, sights, sounds, and events. What an outstanding value!

The background we learned about the various chautauqua speakers was so useful and informative. It made our later interaction with them even more meaningful. It was an excellent experience.

Roger Rosenblatt and Friends is an interesting unique program. You will hear famous authors talk about their work, This is not a lecture, but a sometimes funny, always stimulating time to hear how they create.

Being able to participate in a Chautauqua experience is enhanced by doing it with Road Scholar attendees. Do experience Chautauqua with a Road Scholar program. I recommend it highly.

This was my first Chautauqua trip and my first Road Scholar journey and the combination was perfect for you get all the benefits of the Chautauqua experience as a package with Road Scholar so it is also a good value with everything included. It is a real winner with lodging, parking, food and terrific programs that are varied in nature. The only downside is too many choices for you just can't do everything. But what a delectable dilemma!

I was at chautauqua in July2012. The lectures were interesting and the are many events and speakers all day and in the evening there was was very good entertainment at the amptheater. For me the evening meal was a bit too formal. About an hour and 1/2 while 3 courses were served. I would have prefered a buffet. All in all a very good experince. Rooms at hotel are very small with no TV,

The Chautauqua Road Scholar Program was one of my favorite experiences after attending 43 previous Elderhostels/Road Scholar Programs. This program had truly outstanding speakers, hotel accomodations, food, natural lake setting, all in this beautiful area of New York State.

My experience at Chautauqua was beyond my expectations. The programming was excellent and the week's theme, Water Matters, was timely. National Geographic scientists, ecologists and photographers were presenters. Sylvia Earle, oceanographer and author of The World is Blue, appeared by live feed from the NOAA Reef Base Aquarius submarine laboratory situated off Key Largo, Florida, where she was able to interact with Barton Seaver, National Geographic Fellow, on stage in the 5000 seat ampitheater. We were housed at the beautiful Athenaeum Hotel where Laurie Paterniti-Stanton, Manager of Senior Programming, attended to every detail to make us welcomed and comfortable. She arranged for us to dine on the porch, overlooking beautiful Chautauqua Lake where the view, food and service were superior. An outstanding field trip was to visit one of Chautauqua's water gardens. Ryan Kiblin, Supervisor of Gardens and Landscaping, explained how redirecting water runoff through this filtering system keeps harmful chemicals from entering the lake. I have attached two photos. Annually, Chautauqua offers a number of Themed weeks. I recommend selecting one of particular interest and participating in the Road Scholar program where all details are handled and one can truly enjoy the surroundings, camaraderie, and exceptional presentations.
