What a great program!! This is a small group program, with 6 boys, 6 girls and 13 "grands". Most of the children were about 10 years old, a couple younger and a couple older. It introduced us to the "living" things of Virginia. The Virginia Living Museum is a first-class facility with a very knowledgeable, humorous and dedicated staff. Each of the naturalists had a great presentation style aimed at the children but definitely not boring to the "grands". They know how to keep children interested by engaging them in activities several times an hour which related to the subject. They teach by verbal, visual, hands-on and activity based instruction. The sessions included a lot of live animals which we were able to touch and see up close. The classrooms were equipped with multi-media devices, microscopes, etc. The field trips to the salt marsh, fossil collecting, Jamestown settlement and seine fishing were interesting and fun. The abbreviated history of Jamestown was cleverly done and fun. The museum is both outdoors and indoors and includes a planetarium. The hotel is perfect for a group like ours. There is a large indoor swimming pool where the children "burned off" excess energy in the late afternoon and after the evening session. The accommodations were nice, the hotel staff friendly and helpful and the catered meals were "kid friendly" such as hamburgers, mac 'n cheese, chicken nuggets, etc. as an option to the main course. On our free afternoon we chose to take a taxi to the The Mariner's Museum, which is outstanding and kept my niece interested with lots nf interactive exhibits and entertaining films. One of the grands organized a movie night on our free evening and another popped popcorn for the group. The hotel has its own tiny "movie theater" with movies that can be checked out at the front desk. This was our second inter-generational program and we could not have been happier with our selection of this program.

This was just a fantastic program for grandparents and grandchildren. We had two (slightly rowdy) boys with us and I suspect we pushed the envelope a bit for the leaders, but they could not have been more gracious and patient and good-humored.

The various activities were just perfect for the age group (8-12) and I suspect the favorite was dissecting owl pellets to find the little skulls of the mice the owls had eaten.

The educational quality of all the instruction and hands-on activities was just superb....we all learned so much and had a great time!

Thanks for such a great program.

Calling all grandparents! Take note--this is an outstanding program of naturalist studies that will exceed your expectations. The staff are all former middle school teachers, clearly love what they do, and keep both kids and grandparents engaged. Don't worry that it is in Newport News, VA and you have never heard of the Virginia Living Museum. This is a first rate museum, with a wonderful enthusiastic staff dedicated to teaching and being sure that you have a great week with your grandchild[ren]. Yes, it was hot [!] when we went fossil hunting but we all learned about bandanas around the neck soaked in ice water---very cooling. And the schedule was adjusted because the heat was simply too much for one outside activity but no one really noticed. There was time every day for swimming in the hotel pool [popular activity] and a great, hands on, program after dinner every night [7-8pm] on topics such as owls, snakes, and mammals. On a 10 point scale, we [grandkids and grandparents] gave it a 12!
