5 Days | 4 Nights
ACTIVITY LEVEL: Moderate
EasyFor people looking to exercise their minds more than their bodies. There’s minimal walking and not too many stairs.
ModerateThese programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.

A fantastic way to bring literature to life. My grandchild loved it.

If you are interested in the history of the railroad in the Dunsmuir area, this program is for you. Many exciting field trips and folks from 6 to more than 60 had a wonderful time.

What a great adventure! Our grandson, who is not quite 6 1/2 years old, had a fantastic time with all of the activities. We loved staying in a real boxcar and Pat and Heather are amazing! David & Suzanne, Vista, CA.

This was a fantastic trip, my first as a grandparent, and exceeded all my expectations. Boxcar accommodations are super, exciting schedule of activities and Pat and her daughter Heather run a fabulous camp. The kids connected with the Boxcar Children books in creative and fun ways that encourage imagination and reading and writing skills. Both leaders live in the area and have a long history with trains and the volcanic Mt. Shasta. Pat's love of kids and infectious curiosity won all of us over by the end of camp. A truly EXCELLENT program for the younger children and their grandparents! The length is ideal, and the activities are geared towards that age group. I would recommend this to any grandparent of a 6-8 year old especially.

The program was delightful. The location and accommodations were just right in the beautiful Forests of Northern California. It was fun staying in a caboose. The pool time for the children was wonderful. As always, with Roads Scholars the other participant were one of the best aspects of the trip.

What an excellent program to encourage reading, writing, art, discovery and independence! Pat, the leader, is outstanding!

It was my fifth intergenerational trip, but Cora's first and we both had a really good time! The other kids and grandparents were great; the activities were perfect for the setting and the age group and Pat and Heather were super leaders. We especially appreciated their flexibility and "going with the flow" when the weather did not permit following the schedule as set out! I've already recommended it to an acquaintance for next year!

The Boxcar Adventure was a wonderful experience for my grandson and myself. He had a great time with the other kids, I had a chance to interact with some wonderful people from all over the country, and it allowed me the time to spend some quality one on one time with my grandson. We loved reading the stories, the field trips, the children enjoyed their arts and crafts time (and grandparents enjoyed the one hour break!). Pat and Heather were definitely seasoned leaders which was much appreciated ! Thank you.
