We have been on 3 US and 2 previous International trips with Road Scholar as well as trips with many other companies. This trip was a huge disappointment and I would not recommend taking it. We signed up for a small group...28 is not a small group! We had only one guide, who though very knowledgeable and nice, was not strong on logistics. The accommodations were not 4* by Greek standards, we know as we extended our trip privately and had much better. Twice we had sewer smells in our rooms, most had mold in the bathroom, we had several rooms with no view...we were last in alpha so got the least desirable rooms. Food was plentiful, but often not of high standard, especially breakfast. On the plus side the sites were terrific and the group was great.

Fantastic tour of archaeological sites, museums, and cities with a group leader with a very strong knowledge base. Stella brought this history and culture of Greece to life, and put it all into perspective, giving us a better understanding of the area, past to present. My husband and I were disappointed in the large size of the tour. It was listed as a small group tour (listed as 14-24 people), but we had 30 in the group and that was too many to really get to know people. Make sure to bring either hiking shoes or sneakers with a good gripping sole. The rocks can be tough on your feet if you are not prepared for the hiking over this rough terrain.

Excellent tour of archaeological sites with knowledgeable group leader. The program takes the group to numerous quaint places on the islands, places where the average tourist would never think to go.

Fabulous trip but be prepared for long days with abundant meals. Trip required more luggage hauling than I anticipated. Guide Christianna was extremely well organized, warm, and very informative.

My husband and I really enjoyed this trip. We saw amazing sights dating back to 4 thousand BC. Our guide, Christiana, was wonderful in describing to us all the things we saw and what they meant. It is a strenuous trip and somebody w/difficulty moving around might not enjoy this. We were also disappointed in the quality of the food. However, our guide and the things we saw more than compensated for this small thing.

I am so glad that I went on this trip. The participant were all wonderful people. It would be great if Athina could do all Greece antiquities trips. She is not only a lot of fun. She is amazing in her breadth of knowledge.

Athina Trigoni was a fantastic guide who deserves all the credit for making this trip a success. She was attentive to every participant; she knows her "stuff"; she's engaging and witty and incredibly knowledgeable. We didn't miss a "highlight" at any of our stops because of her command of Greek history, culture and geography. Great job, Athina! Thank you for making Greece so memorable.

Our leader, Athina Trigoni, was new to Road Scholar, but well-versed in all aspects of ancient/modern Greece. Only the Athens hotel had a room conducive to a "lecture" so Athina served as our volcanologist/paleontologist/archeologist/historian "lecturing" to us as we rode and walked to and from the various sites. She translated signs and customs, food and prices and was the good foreign friend we all wish we had. The activity level is "moderately challenging." Good shoes and a walking stick is suggested for the Acropolis. The good shoes are again suggested for the cobbled streets and sidewalks of the island towns visited

Bob and I were also very pleased and satisfied with our Road Scholar outing. Christiana was unfailingly cheerful and helpful, and her breadth of knowledge about art and history in Greece was wonderful. We were so glad that we had chosen "moderately strenuous": this description helped to create a group of active, interested adults who usually had plenty of energy for the long and very full days. The weather, the stories, the art, the history, and, very much, the other members of the group made this trip totally memorable. Thank you all!

I highly recommend this Aegean adventure. Our guide, Christiana, was simply the best - friendly, knowledgeable, articulate and a lot of fun. The itinerary is very well planned and the included meals were great, especially in Crete. The hotel in Athens was very close to the Acropolis and the Plaka, a superb location for taking a walk at dusk with the Parthenon hauntingly lit. There are so many highlights: the Acropolis, Delos, Akrotiri, lunch and dinners in the Plaka, the new museums for the the artifacts in Athens, Fira and Heraklion, walking through the gorgeous island towns, the taverna dancing night in Santorini (it really was fun and everyone danced,) a sunny morning at Knossos, lovely Venetian Rethymnon (wish we had more time there,) sailing into Santorini, the crater of a volcano with whitewashed towns clinging to the caldera - breathtaking. After the cruise ship crowds leave, you'll truly appreciate having taken the ferries and staying ON the islands. Take time to have drinks at the atmospheric water front cafes at Mykonos, Paros, Chania and Fira. And DO pack LIGHT. It will make rolling your luggage on and off the ferries much easier. Thanks to Christiana and our terrific traveling companions for making our adventure so memorable.

This was my first Road Scholar trip and it was wonderful. Efi,our guide, was outstanding and turned us into a family within a few days.I second everything Lindrea said in her comments. As a solo traveler I felt welcome and included. I will definitely plan another trip but the Greek Island tour is not to be missed

We were on the June 4-17, 2016 trip, and couldn't have been more pleased with our group, our guide (Efi), and the arrangements for lodgings, ferries, meals, sites and museums visited. This was a trip of a lifetime, and confirmed the generous and patient nature of the Greek people, who are enduring big changes at present. Greece is a beautiful country. We will be back! This was a most enjoyable trip. Our wonderful guide Eleni Petroutsou made the program very enjoyable with her knowledge and ability to handle any situation. My wife and I had been with Eleni on a previous three week program and she was the reason I chose this program date. We were tired when on returning home, but the trip is rated moderately challenging. We covered a lot of ground in a short time. Traveling on commercial ferries was a unique experience. I am glad to have followed the information packet to travel light. We took only carry-on size luggage and all synthetic clothes. The Cyclades are a collage of white washed buildings with enjoyable little allies to wander down. Delos is very rich in ancient history and was a pivotal island during Athenian Era. This was our second time in Athens. I found the second time more enjoyable. I was able to see things in more detail as the first time you are awed by the Acropolis. The National Archeological Museum is well worth the trip to Athens. On returning to Athens from Crete, we used our free time to go to the Greek Unknown Solders Memorial to watch the guards in traditional uniforms perform; do not miss. The food in Athens and on the Islands was excellent; I gained four pounds.

I highly recommend this trip and feel so privileged to have had Elsa as our guide! The Greek islands rank high on my list for having some of the world’s most beautiful scenery, greatest food, and some of the world’s most intriguing history and art. Elsa’s passion for history, art, and Greece itself, was present in every moment as she captivated us with her talks, often as we strolled on foot through a new destination. She personally curated museums for us, showing us important pieces, providing context, and connecting the dots between mythology, archeological sites, history and people. We appreciated Elsa’s thoughtfulness, practicality and humor. It is a good sign when you wish you could stay in a place longer, wanting to learn and experience more. Couldn’t have asked for a better introduction to Greece!

Having taken several Road Scholar trips to Eastern Europe, I found that this one did not measure up. Thirty is too large a group for only one guide, who had to negotiate several ferries, count heads, narrate about sites, etc. There had always been at least two people and lectures were given by several guests and at localities. Too much free time, and not enough time for museums, several of which were closed when we were there. Hotel accommodations were uneven, especially poor was the Dedalus Hotel. I too will return to Athens and Greece, but not with Road Scholar.

Susan from Concord, MA Number of programs attended: 1

Greece and especially Crete were simply breathtaking, all that I'd hoped for. But there was way too much free time in places where there was nothing to do but shop--and we were really encouraged to shop. And some of the cultural activities (cooking demos, dinner at a Greek home, ouzo tasting, wine tasting) either didn't happen at all or when they did, barely qualified as such. (Mixing cucumbers into yogurt as a cooking demonstration? no.) I don't know if this is true of every tour, but it was certainly true of ours. Lastly, having done the recommended reading, I was expecting more depth and detail, perhaps a talk from a vulcanologist or archaeologist, during the lectures. Isn't that sort of a Road Scholar hallmark? And calling an old Katharine Hepburn movie a "Greek Performance" is just silly. On the plus side, the ferries and buses were handled efficiently, the hotels were fine (especially the Lato in Crete), and our guide was very enthusiastic. I'll definitely go back to Greece, but probably with a different tour company.

There was a problem in that we had made clear the dates when we would be out-of-town. The staff ignored that information and therefore were unable to contact us about a change in hotel accommodations. This caused us considerable inconvenience and expense.

This trip was more than we could ever have imagined! I feel like we really got to see Greece and I have totally changed my perception of this beautiful country. Our group leader, Eleni, was excellent! She has an extensive background and her passion made the antiquities we viewed come to life. Her talks were expressive and made me want to know more. There were many details to this trip as we moved every few days and she handled everything with ease. The hotels were great and in good locations. Often Eleni made sure we got to experience the ‘real Greece’ either by stopping at a local café and interacting with the locals, stopping to buy a local treat to let us try it, or expressively relating a legend from Mythology that pertained to an historical site. There was much walking, so be attentive to the ‘moderately challenging’ classification and using the Ferry system is an experience in itself. We got to see most of the amazing sites that you have heard about and much more! The Greek people were friendly and welcoming. If you really want to experience Greece, this is the trip for you

Our guide (Eleni) was the best guide we have ever had on our tours. Consequently, this tour was also the best. We learned more about Greece from Eleni than we had learned in a recent short college course on Greece we took to prepare for the trip. The different locations were carefully curated, and highly educational. The physical activity level is as described. Be sure you can meet it. A wonderful tour of a beautiful, historic country.

I cannot imagine a better way to see Athens and the amazing Greek Islands. To say our leader Efi Giakali was exceptional is an understatement. Her knowledge, love of country and history, sense of humor, special insights and ability to manage everything in a professional manner was truly remarkable. Efi transmitted her love of the sea, the sights and sounds, the food, the people and the culture to us in such a way that soon into the trip we shared her love of everything around us too. I want to thank you Road Scholar and especially thank you Efi. 12 days of sun with cloudless skies, a chance to swim or wade in the Aegean Sea added to the enjoyment. Prepare for some challenging walks, but reaching the top of the Acropolis and walking around the wonder that is the Parthenon is worth every step. This is a trip not to be missed.

Lots of walking mostly up hill over uneven surfaces and very hot. Otherwise a great trip. Learned a great deal about ancient Greek civilizations that I did not know as they were discovered after I took ancient history classes. A very worthwhile trip, beautiful scenery, good food and great people. But as mentioned earlier, very physically stressful.

Absolutely fantastic! None better than John Milton's Paradise Lost."...where on the Aegean shore a city stands, Built, pure the air and light the soil, Athens, the eye of Greece, mother of the arts And eloquence, native to famous wits"... and, of course, with Eleni's exceptional knowledge and guidance, none other could possibly duplicate.

This is a marvelous program, which expanded my knowledge of the Cyclades Isles immensely. The all-inclusive nature of the program was a huge attraction, in that the travel, hotels, tour guide, and boat transfers as well as meals and museum entrance fees and gratuities were included. I would recommend this program 'in a heartbeat' to all who want to learn more about the ancient Greek world of the central Mediterranean dating back to several millenia BC (from the ancient Minoans to present day Greece) I'm ready to go back soon to explore and learn more about this region !

Just visiting the Greek islands is a wonderful experience in itself. Visiting the islands with Road Scholars was extraordinary. Our guide, Maria, was excellent--very knowledgable, extremely patient, and marvelously efficient in moving us along from ferry to hotel to restaurant. Her knowledge and ability to communicate it to us was very much appreciated. I also give high marks to Road Scholars for arranging good hotels and meal experiences that I am sure we could not have had on our own.
