6 Days | 5 Nights
ACTIVITY LEVEL: Moderately Challenging
While all of our learning adventures offer extraordinary value, our "Best Value" programs were rated by our participants themselves who thought their dollar went particularly far.
Love to learn in a small-group setting? This collection of programs has at most 10-24 participants.
See our Small Group programs.
EasyFor people looking to exercise their minds more than their bodies. There’s minimal walking and not too many stairs.
ModerateThese programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.

This was a WONDERFUL bike trip!! Beautiful area, interesting history, music, and theater as well as superb biking. I knew that I would enjoy the Virginia Creeper, but the Shady Valley, TN ride was equally enjoyable. Everything ran very smoothly, nice people, good food and I felt very well cared for on the bike trails. Thank you!!

Enjoyed repeating this program! The trail was so peaceful, and I loved riding over the 47 trestles. The fall weather was just right for biking. This year, we took a 'backstage' tour of the Barter Theatre, which was very interesting. What a lovely place! We saw two performances there . . . one was included in the program, and the other was an optional add-on.

My physical abilities were challenged but felt completely safe with the on site back up staff. The trail provided an experience seeing the Virginia plant life and streams available to bikers or hikers on the creeper trail. A wonderful way to be in the out of doors for the day.

This was a fine program, well organized and ably led. The description of the degree of difficulty, "moderately challenging", was accurate.

My husband & I thoroughly enjoyed biking the Virginia Creeper with Road Scholar and recommend it for a great biking experience and to see a lovely area of the Virginia mountains. The leaders were knowledgable, warm and friendly; it was a small group; the food was good; the weather was great.

Great variety of both trail and road biking in very scenic areas. We had a wonderful group and the size was good for biking. All of our group leaders and support staff were outstanding. We had a blast!

One suggestion I wish had been included in the packing list would be to while biking wear clothes that you don't mind getting ruined as it is nearly impossible to get the 'black stripe' on your back out in the wash. This only occurs if the trail is muddy, otherwise you don't need to worry about it. On the plus side, if it does rain, you get the pleasure of seeing and hearing the creeks and rivers at their most beautiful which makes the ride doubly impressive.

The biking in this program was easier than I expected and the rides were some of the safest and most beautiful I have experienced anywhere in the world. Everyone involved in the program brings Southern Hospitality to a new level. The evening activities are very entertaining and you will come to appreciate the slower pace of this gorgeous Southern area. But it's the bicycle rides that will make you want to come back -as one visit is just not enough riding on the beautiful trails in this part of Virginia.

The 4H facility where we stayed took me back to a simpler, more genuine time. The campus is gorgeous. The Va Creeper Trail is all that I expected and more. I loved spending time outdoors and even enjoyed the two drizzly days. (You'll be fine if you bring the right clothes!) Every person involved in this program was key to making this an outstanding experience -- Kevin (friendly program coordinator), Henry (leader on the trail, keeping us safe), Joe (van driver, aka 'The Smiler' ), Louis (sweeper on the trail, making sure those at the back are okay), and the folks in the kitchen added so much personality, fun, and commitment to excellence. The attendees were delightful, and by the end of the program, we had bonded into a friendly group. The Va Creeper Trail should not be missed -- what a wonderful break from politics, cell phones, computers, and crowds. I also loved spending time in the woods in the fall while the leaves were changing. Gorgeous!

"Ever since buying a bike, friends have asked if I've cycled the 'VA Creeper Trail,' a 34.3-mile rail-to-recreation trail starting in Abingdon, VA. Now I understand why. We cycled past waterfalls, pastures & gorges and over 47 incredible wooden bridges / trestles. At times, I felt totally alone on the trail (but really wasn't). It was heavenly . . . almost a zen-like experience." Uploaded By: Madeleine
