I have been trying to convince my husband to take a river rafting trip with me for years, but he always balked at sleeping on the ground. When I saw that this Rogue River rafting adventure featured inner spring mattresses and warm showers every night, I knew we had found our trip. At the end of each day of negotiating rapids through beautiful scenery, we enjoyed an excellent dinner and breakfast, interesting conversation with our new friends, and all the conveniences of civilization. All three back-country lodges – reachable only via the river or the trail along it – had beautiful settings, welcoming lodge-keepers, and fascinating stories. With our safety always foremost in their minds, our expert and delightful young river guides nevertheless were able to offer us each day the choice of paddling on the paddle raft, riding on the gear raft, or trying an inflatable kayak. The kayaks offered the most exciting rides but were the “riskiest,” and we did pull a capsized Road Scholar from the river more than once. I confined myself to the paddle raft or gear boat and had enough excitement that way without ever feeling the least bit nervous. (The rapids were fun, not unnerving.) I also very much enjoyed the hikes and stops along the river at historic sites each day. This trip had everything: scenic beauty, adventure, comradeship, good lodging, and good food. My husband enjoyed it so much, that he just might be ready to try a river rafting trip that required him to sleep in a tent at night!
