Alan, Teresa and Curt, the leaders, are SUPERIOR and friendly Wineries were SUPERIOR and Interesting Cabin were O K, but we did not have running water or flushing toilets for a while, because of a water pipe break Lodge food was O K

I enjoyed the program as we explored a beautiful area of the country and learned about birding and winemaking. I am not a birder, and thought this program offered activity and contact with nature. I was not interesting in spending much time in a classroom setting. This was my first Roads Scholar program but I have visited lots of state and national parks and I thought the lodging and meals were pretty much what I expected. I like that type of atmosphere, so I was pleased.

Very disappointing program. We hardly did any birding...perhaps one hour per day. The program leaders did not seem all that knowledgeable about birds. This program should not have the word "Birding" in its title. There was a lot of time spent riding around in a van. Accomodations were barely adequate. Meals in the restaurant were mostly deep fried foods with green beans and potatoes. If you are serious about birding, find another program. Other people on the trip told me not to judge Road Scholar by this one bad program, that many of them are very good. I don't think I can afford to find out.

I think we could have used another day at this delightful area, maybe by adding geology to the topics. The participants varied quite a bit in birding skill, but we all helped each other. Jody took us on a successful owl prowl and got two barred owls to reply to our tape. Also a "snake trail" on a comfortable gravel path, where we saw a yellowbellied water snake at a safe distance. Curt's original songs were a charming end to the last evening. With the govt. shutdown another venue had to be found for the pontoon boat ride, Cedar Lake, which was delightful. I would encourage anyone considering this trip to stay long enough to explore the Giant City trail in the park, plus the films in the visitor center (not part of the agenda.) The park cabins were very nice but we didn't have daily maid service; not a problem for a short stay. Plenty of food, served family style.
