This program provided an excellent opportunity to expand photography skills in a supportive group with skilled, enthusiastic instructors. The locations were many and varied so there was ample opportunity to practice new skills with different subjects and lighting. Although the pace was demanding, the staff was encouraging and set a tone conducive to sharing ideas and perspectives.

A wonderful opportunity to make photos. Ted and Harlan knew just where to have us be and when for the best shots. The director Marilyn made everything run smoothly. She had much to inform us about the peoples and the history of the Black Hills area and South Dakota. The Bison Roundup was a real highlight. The 6 day trip, was actually 4 days of visiting sites and shooting. Too much to do in too short a time. Needs to have one more day to absorb it all. South Dakota is AWESOME!

Great potential as a PHOTOGRAPHY tour. Program was too short (only 4 days), days were too long and often exhausting. Adding at least one day would help.

This is an awesome program! Had plenty of sites to photograph and plenty of time at each place. Very knowledgeable leader and photographers. Got help/instruction when you needed it, but it wasn't forced upon you. Had a wonderful time with a great group.

South Dakota was so much more than I expected. This trip checked off several things from my bucket list and fulfilled my photography obsession for awhile! I loved this trip.

Overall this is a terrific program and as stated by others, Marilyn is an excellent organizer and Ted and Harlan are patient and knowledgeable photographers. The Black Hills are a beautiful area to explore and photograph. The Howard Johnson is clean and comfortable but isolated from town. I would have preferred access to a normal breakfast instead of a continental breakfast at HJ. To me, Crazy Horse Monument and particularly the Mammoth Site offered minimal photographic opportunities and I would rather have spent more time in Custer SP, Badlands or Spearfish, which are all beautiful, or even downtown Rapid City, which I enjoyed immensely. I believe anyone interested in photography will enjoy this program.

I can only speak in superlatives about this program: Marilyn, the director, is experienced, knowledgeable and wonderful, Ted and Harlan are tops as photographers, very encouraging, helpful and offered plenty of constructive criticism, South Dakota was gorgeous and in bloom (Wyoming too), the weather obliged, and my roommate was great! Keep it up, Road Scholar!

Take off the comment for last year's Black Hills photo class with it's negativity about the food. Before we went off the trip, we were put off by it, but are now pleased to report the food was excellent.

Kathy from Worden, MT Number of programs attended: 9
Date attended: 06/08/14 - 06/13/14
Wonderful program. Beautifully orchestrated. Marilyn is a top notch director and Harlan & Ted are great photographers & instructors. We were at the right place at the right time to get the best light with the instructors at our side. The meal at the Sylvan Lodge was over the top...buffalo & elk. Lodging was also fantastic. Got great images. Thank you Road Scholar for this great program !!!
