We thoroughly enjoyed our 5 days in Natchez learning about it's history, touring mansions, and, of course getting to know more interesting people. It was also fun to see "southern genteel" ladies as our coordinator and guides. Will need to take the Vicksburg program next. The listening devices work so well, very helpful.

Great Peek Into Current White Southern Culture. Wow, I am so glad I attended this program. The major learning for me was not what they said, but what they didn't say. We toured mansion after mansion. Again and again we heard, "We had the greatest collection of millionaires in the world and all that money came from 'King Cotton'". We also heard about the dozens of "servents" it took to run the mansions. Of course the truth is that the money came not from cotton, but from slavery. And the so-called servents were slaves. We attended the Historic Natchez Tableaux which is an amateur production about the history of Natchez. It is produced by the two major garden clubs in the city. It takes hundreds of volunteers to produce the event. It was a reflection of the white establishment - a total of three black faces in the cast. Upon inquiry, I learned that the prestigous roles of king and queen are awarded on the basis of long family history and tradition and in the case of the queen ability to pay for a gown that rivals any wedding dress I have seen. The poplulatin of Natchez is 60% black, but you would not know it from this program.

Evelyn from Rochester, n.y. We loved Natchez, the lovely hotel on the river, and the program. Our 8th Road Scholar, and, I hope, not the last.

Lynne from Fairfield, CT Number of programs attended: 2

This is a very well-paced program. The hotel is lovely, right on the river, and the sites are easy walking distance. There was always an activity, no waiting around, but no rushing, either. Food was always good, sometimes great. We learned a lot; so glad we went.

Nachez is a very interesting city to visit and very easy to get around in.It has many attractions from plantations to churches to interesting terrain along the Mississippi river.

This was an outstanding program ! It was organized well and the pace was just right.
We started each morning with an informative lecture by a local expert, then we walked to either houses or churches or both. Lunch was served at one of these places. Afterward we either saw another house or had free time.
The walking is no more than 10 blocks at the most and one always had the option of driving to the venues, parking was no problem.
The hotel was quite new and the rooms comfortable. They served the same thing each morning for breakfast but one really shouldn't complain about having scrambled eggs, sausage and biscuits every day.

I would highly rccommend this program to any one who is interested in history and southern literature .

Linda from Brevard, NC Number of programs attended: 7
Date attended: 04/01/12 - 04/06/12
The group was too large and although often divided into smaller groups, after walking to the site, there was considerable standing and waiting at many venue sites.THere were no menu and food choices at lunch and dinner provided by Road's Scholar. The program talks/lectures were interesting.
