Road Scholar has thousands of educational adventures to choose from. A good way to narrow down our list is to browse our collection of "Most Popular" programs.
See all of our Most Popular programs.
EasyFor people looking to exercise their minds more than their bodies. There’s minimal walking and not too many stairs.
ModerateThese programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.

If you're considering this trip but you're not quite sure . . . it's everything these participants say it is PLUS this year and next you get to see history in the making. Since 2007, the Panamanians have been working hard to expand the Canal so that ships double the size of the current Panamax vessels can pass through the Canal. A trip to the new Colon visitor center on the final day gives a great view of the enormity of this expansion project. What a bonus to actually witness the construction of this expansion and bring home pictures to share with future generations! Would add that reading David McCullough's book added a LOT to my understanding of "one of the world's greatest engineering accomplishments". If time doesn't allow you to read the entire book, concentrate on the American section (1904 - 1914).

It was a Panama Hat trick because we saw the canal by road, by boat and by train - all in the space of 4 days! The program was a thorough investigation of the canal in all its glory and grit, including the new locks under construction. Our days were packed with little downtime except for a couple hours in Colon when we jumped in the glorious pool at the Melia Hotel, once home to the infamous School of the Americas. Our group was the largest I've ever known in more than 10 years of Road Scholar travel. We were 52, joined by another 8 going on to Costa Rica. They had their own bus and guide, so we saw them only during meals and lectures, as well as on the canal transit boat and train ride. In retrospect, it probably is good that we were so many since that enabled us to have an exclusive charter boat to transit the canal which took an entire day. We were lucky to do it in 8 hours, about the minimum possible. We did not wait at any of the locks, but were squired right in along with a container ship, moored in front of us on the way up, and then with another ship, moored in the back on the way down. We also were joined by a small family sailboat in the last set of locks. It was fascinating to watch all they had to do to keep from being tail-spun in our wash after untying from our vessel. The bus trips took us to both visitor centers, the old one at Miraflores, and the brand new one at Gatun locks. The hour-long train ride was a relaxing way to see our path along the canal one last time from the sightseeing dome car. My only regret was the lack of cultural and colonial history of Panama covered. It was all about the canal. I would like to see the program extended by a day or two to see something of the country outside the Canal Zone. I was fortunate to stay an extra day to visit Panama Viejo and learn all its history and drama. But I never did get that Panama Hat. I'll just have to go back!

This was my first Road Scholar trip and it lived up to my expectations. The guides were excellent, the food wonderful, and the CANAL...well, that left me speechless which is very hard to do. I have already recommended this trip to several friends.

This was my third trip with Road Scholar and the first outside of the US. I recommend this trip. The guides were very knowledgeable and helpful. The hotels and food were fine. Our day light transit of the canal was in a 90 ft tour boat which allowed us to touch the lock walls and see the huge cargo ships that accompanied us close up. I wish the tour guide had had us introduce ourselves at the start of the trip which would have expedited our getting acquainted with our fellow travelers.

I chose this program for personal interest and it fulfilled that need to learn about the Panama Canal. The leaders, Archibaldo and Gustavo, were efficient, knowledgeable, and extraordinarily pleasant and helpful. Our group was combined with a group that was continuing on to Costa Rica, unfortunately there were way too many people together. Most of the learning experiences were well chosen.

This was a fabulous program. The leaders were friendly, well-organized and hard-working. The only drawback is that there were too many people.

We had a great time and were like two litle watching the ships go through the locks and the building of the new lock.

Pat from San Jose, CA Number of programs attended: 8

We thoroughly enjoyed this program and all the sites we saw and learned about. We particularly enjoyed seeing the new Gatun Locks construction and the view at the Miraflores Locks Visitor Center. I thought my husband was going to stay out on the deck and not come in for dinner so that he could continue watching the ships going through the lock. The boat transit and the train ride were great. We can't praise our leaders Archie, Gustavo, and Wendell enough; they took such good care of us! We look forward to going on another program soon.

Jean from Clinton, MA Number of programs attended: 23

There were approximately 70 people in the group. So, if you like standing in line to get on and off the bus, go to the toilet, get a meal, etc. you will like this program. The Panama Canal is very interesting -- just wish the group had been smaller and better managed.

We just completed the Grits and Glory tour of the Panama Canal and it was everything we had hoped for. Well organized, fun, competent and knowledgeable leaders, and a great learning experience.

As an engineer, I wanted to do more than just take a cruise through the canal. I wanted to learn about it's history, design and operations. I got just what I wanted!

As usual, the progrm was good value with events exactly as published in the brochures and mailings. Food was good quality buffet and hotels were of typical US quality. Tap water is drinkable (although Road Scholar provides bottled water at every opportunity) and electricity is 110 volts. One hotel was the former CIA School of the Americas (with a Latin lobby logo of "Peace to the World"). Canal transit on the 100-foot Islamorada gave an opportunity to touch the side of a lock and look up, way up, at cargo carriers and liners. Return trip on the railroad was in refurbished 1930s/1940s US Pullmans and Vista Dome.

Speakers were from the ACP (Panama Canal Administration) were knowledgeable, personable and spoke clear, understandable English. One in the hotel tells you about the canal before you go and the other on the boat tells about it as you go.

Read David McCullough's book.

Five days is the right amount of time to see the Canal and Panama City. Check a guide book and arrange a side trip to visit the Kuna Indians (molas makers) or perhaps see a golden frog in El Valle, loll on a beach or, if the schedule is right, book Road Scholar birding in Coasta Rica.

This program offers an exceptional opportunity to witness the past, present and future aspects of Panama and the Panama Canal, including the failed French efforts and the hugely successful American efforts. The leadership is superb. The activity level is only slightly demanding.

Barbara from Providence, RI Number of programs attended: 12

In this age of global financial perplexity it was exciting to see a relatively small national entity conducting a government operation that brings prosperity to the entire population.
By and large the enormous container ships are lined up at each end of the canal waiting to transit from one ocean to another. All of this takes place at a price. The sport fisherman from Santa Catalina that shared the various locks with our small craft had to pay $1000.00 to the Panama Canal Authority. The Enormous container ship (registered in Liberia) that shared the locks with us paid $400,000.00 to the Authority.
Not surprisingly, the Authority is busily engaged in an engineering project with locks that will allow even lager ships to enter and leave the huge Lake Gatun and transit one ocean to aniother.
Engineering/Financially - astonishing.

Firstly, Holbrook Travel did a wonderful job handling travel arrangements. This program seem short for the long distance. Ironically it covered EVERYTHING an independent traveler would have, but without more time allowance for lying around the hotel pool! I'm blown away on how well orchestrated, especially for a large group of more than 60 participants! The first thing the local guide emphasized was that the food/water is SAFE and delicious, contrary to any obsolete facts! All meals were the most efficient delicious buffets ever! I didn't skip a single meal, as I do in many other Road Scholar trips! We had a wide range in the age of participants which ADDED to the quality and pleasure of the trip! We should lower the age to 25. It really ADDS to the fun/POSITIVE atmosphere, keeping the oftentimes crotchety old people behavior at bay! Positive attitudes are contagious! Road Scholar is going to have a bumper crop of healthy fit active positive baby boomers in the horizon with disposable travel pensions!
