Program #18520RJ
6 Days | 5 Nights
ACTIVITY LEVEL: Moderate
Road Scholar has thousands of educational adventures to choose from. A good way to narrow down our list is to browse our collection of "Most Popular" programs.
See all of our Most Popular programs.
EasyFor people looking to exercise their minds more than their bodies. There’s minimal walking and not too many stairs.
ModerateThese programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.

My husband, Gerry, and I cannot imagine a better way to see these beautiful islands. We have each been to over 220 Elderhostels, and we rate this one A+. On our own we could never have experienced what we did thanks to this program, which focused a lot on the islanders and how they live in these remote places. We enjoyed meeting writers, artists and an art collector, musicians, people in sustainable agriculture, and residents of a green community. Our accommodations and meals in Friday Harbor were excellent, too, so we had a great week and highly recommend this Road Scholar program.

In planning a visit to the San Juan Islands one first hears about how beautiful they are. Which is true but there is another whole dimension to the Islands which we heard about when we visited the site of the American and British camps dating from the Revolutionary War . Much history here that I did not study in school !!

This is a wonderful program. And the islands are sensationally beautiful. But is somewhat physically demanding if you have problems breathing or walking.

For anyone who enjoys the outdoors and who likes getting to know the people where they are traveling this would be a great Road Scholar program to enroll in. I gave me a new perspective on another very different part of our United States. It is hard to realize that you are actually in the United States when you are there.

Island Hopping on three of Washington's San Juan Islands was all we expected and more. We had a wonderful time, and enjoyed our learning experience with a great staff of people.

The San Juan Island trip was just great in every respect. Organization, education, accomodations and FOOD. I would recommend this trip.

I really enjoyed my visit to the San Juan Islands. The leaders were very knowledgeable and personable, the food great and the weather cool but comfortable. We had enough variety of destinations, guest speakers and interaction to please everybody.

My advice? Take a Road Scholar trip! I'm 77 and this is my first. Although I've traveled a great deal in my life, my San Juan Islands trip was right up there with the best. The people who were drawn together by Road Scholar were delightful. We had the perfect balance of play, education and exercise. The planners and leaders showed us the best the place had to offer. I can't wait for my next trip with Road Scholar.

Nary a Starbucks, nor a McDonalds, nor a WalMart, nor a Macy's are to be found in the islands. The pace of life is dictated by the ferry schedule since that is the only way to access any of these islands. Visiting the islands is a like stepping back in time, and like any small community, the best way to know it is to hear from the locals. Road Scholars through program provider Skagit Valley College get just such an introduction. In just five short days, we saw not only the museums and standard tourist venues, but also learned from people who have made a living in the islands for decades, developing a real appreciation for the island's history, culture and arts. And the vistas available, of both the Cascades and the Olympics, were jaw-dropping. Observing the sun rising over the shoulder of Mount Baker from the wharf in Friday Harbor was a true highlight. And visiting in spring before the heavy tourist season gets underway meant that we had the town pretty much to ourselves in all its spring splendor!

The program was very educational, great speakers, and the nice part was that everything was taken care of, our room, our meals, and our transportation.

I can thoroughly recommend this program to all--you will appreciate the beauty of the islands and the expertise of the instructors.

Great week. The program leader, Emily Reed, is a jewel and a font of local knowledge. All of the presenters were excellent and the range of topics extraordinary. The only faults: Too much food and too little exercise.

Sharron from Toano, VA Number of programs attended: 1

We retired recently and the Road Scholar program caught our interest. The San Juan Islands was our first program and it was outstanding. We learned so much, enjoyed touring the beautiful Islands, were impressed with the knowledgeable presenters, our guide was TOP NOTCH and we met some very nice people. We think the Road Scholar program is wonderful and highly recommend it.
