I have just returned home from the Advanced Kayaking on the Lower Columbia River trip. I am still smiling. Everthing about this program was wonderful. The Lucky Mudd Bed and Breakfast where I stayed was a true gem which sparkled even more when owners Jessica and Sunrise were in the room. The guides, Mark, Andrew and Katie, were very experienced as well as friendly and very approachable. This is truly a challenging trip and we all paddled the distance thanks to their leadership and encouragement. I would highly recommend this trip to experienced kayakers who wish to expand their kayaking skills and stretch their comfort zones. Truly exhilarating!

Having a program for experienced kayakers was a great idea! The group did very well together, with no one lagging behind nor surging ahead. We still had an opportunity to improve our individual skills under the instruction of our guides. The equipment used was top quality. While the meals and accomdations were first class, it was the hospitality of the hosts that stood out. Local color, the history and the culture of the Columbia Pacific region was brought out in the music, lectures and discussions by our guides. And I got to paddle with a bunch of great people, eh?

This is the first Road Scholar kayaking trip on which my husband and myself enjoyed the challenge of kayaking. Without beginners, the whole group learned more about skills, kayaks, currents, rivers, weather, and our own abilities. Our special skills instructor, Karl Andersson, was outstanding, and the everyday information from Mark and Andrew was right on! These leaders provided a choice of excellent, frequently brand-new equipment, and made sure that everyone found a kayak which fit them.
On the river, we learned local history and environmental science as we paddled the shores of this spectacular area. In the evenings, the programs enforced this knowledge with Mark's talk on kayaks and a local historian. The sextet singing group sang songs tied to local themes, which were poignant and well done. The "Lewis and Clark" duet was so good! We loved our B&B with "Norman the duck", excellent food, and welcoming hosts. With a compatible group of kayakers, this was an excellent program.

My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed this program. Andrew and Mark were exceptional guides and program instructors. We felt challenged yet supported during each activity and kayak trip. We both gained kayak skills and confidence. Both Andrew and Mark made very interesting evening presentations. Mark's interest and expertise with Greenland kayaking, kayak history and sails for kayaks provided a new perspective on kayaking. Andrew was an exceptional musician in addition to kayak instructor. We very much enjoyed his music group and "historical" music duet. A multi talented and faceted individual. What could he not do and do well????
Our group was diverse but I think we all enjoyed getting to know each other. I encourage Road Scholar to continue offering this program.

Mark Whitaker and Andrew Emlen are experienced and friendly kayaking guides. Their camaraderie provided a safe and relaxed feeling for the experience. The program was fun and included kayaking skill coaching, music, history, and laughter. I formed new friendships and would recommend this program to anyone who loves kayaking and wants to increase their skill level and take on new challenges. The accommodations were amazing, the food was great and our talented hosts ensured our stay was comfortable.
