6 Days | 5 Nights
ACTIVITY LEVEL: Moderately Challenging
Road Scholar has thousands of educational adventures to choose from. A good way to narrow down our list is to browse our collection of "Most Popular" programs.
See all of our Most Popular programs.
EasyFor people looking to exercise their minds more than their bodies. There’s minimal walking and not too many stairs.
ModerateThese programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.

Have we experienced the life of an opera singer? Come hear one tell us her/his story. And then there is Will Berger...twice he spins his web as we are caught in it and never want him to finish. Do you know what a prompter really does during the opera? And then there is Dan...his knowledge and he tells us in such a fun way. Of course you attend the Met and is there anything like it in our country? This program is beyond anything I imagined. Come join a group of opera lovers and have a joyful time.

I totally agree with Al from TX. The program and people involved were top notch. This was my first trip to New York and the Met. I traveled as a single-what a pleasant and safe way to experience the city and great opera.

For confirmed opera lovers or beginners who are interested in an introduction to this pinnacle form of the theater arts, this program is the perfect opportunity to experience performances at one of the world's premier opera companies and interact with experts who will provide insights into every aspect of their production and presentation.

I totally recommend this program. Excellent lectures, operas, advice, and great fellow participants. A great first experience for me with Roads Scholar. Inspiring to meet two opera singers who shared so much with us!

Lectures on opera make this program very worthwhile for the less knowledgeable. David and I especially enjoyed the presentation by soprano Jolie Rocke Brown who not only discussed opera history but also sang five arias for us. She ensured that we will long remember our first Road Scholar program. We also much valued the contributions of Dan Egan, a master teacher, and Beth Greenberg, an enthusiast/director who explained how the intermeshing of the three main facets of opera (music, words, visuals) make it a complete art form. Attending two operas at "The Met" with a compatible group of participants was fun despite the uncomfortable seats (insufficient legroom for ancient knees or tall people). Dinners away from the hotel were good. However, the best part, in terms of food, was the timing of this February program to coincide with "Restaurant Week in NYC". By the time we left on Sunday, David and I had enjoyed three special menus at the Russian Tearoom, Glass House Tavern, and Circo, along with a Saturday night at the Fig & Olive. All were recommended by fellow participants whom we hereby thank!

This is an outstanding way to experience the Met, learn more about opera as an entertainment medium. It is an exceptional bargain, well presented and seamless.

Sharon from Saint Paul, MN Number of programs attended: 13
Date attended: 01/12/14 - 01/17/14
The Ultimate Opera Program is exceptional. The setting, opportunity to learn about opera from the professionals engaged in the Metropolitan Opera and attend two operas then discuss them afterward was fantastic. There is time to go to additional operas or other performances at the Met or elsewhere in New York. The organization of the program and staff who make it all flow seamlessly is well worth it. We plan to return for additional Ultimate Opera programs!

Janis from Enfield, CT Number of programs attended: 5

This was a wonderful program. so good, I will go again in the future. Two different operas will make the program different. My complements to the people who arranged the program, the speakers, especially, were outstanding. I do suggest upgrading the seats at the opera.

The staff were very helpful in providing suggestions and directions for doing fun things in New York City during our free time---it could not have been any better! I would highly recommend this to others!

We had a wonderful experience with the Ultimate Opera program. We can't say enough about the quality of the presenters. Of course, the operas were the best but our appreciation of the opera has been enhanced significantly by attending this program - our first by the way.

It was a most enjoyable 5 days. The hotel is well located, the speakers were excellent and the operas, of course, were wonderful. The staff and volunteers are very helpful with directions and suggestions for navigating in NYC. If you like music or opera, definitely go on this trip. I plan to go again someday.

David from Westminster, MD Number of programs attended: 2

The lectures, operas, and back stage tour of the Lincoln Center were excellent. Road Scholar staff helped us navigate the NYC subway and took us to the 9/11 memorial site. The New Yorker hotel was well located for those who travelled by Amtrak-like us. But, during a cold week, we found that our room lacked adequate insulation. A soda placed between the window and curtain froze! Overall this was a top notch program and a good value.

Anne from Oxford, OH Number of programs attended: 3
Date attended: 11/25/12 - 11/30/12
An outstanding program delivered by thorough professionals - all the lectures were terrific and the performances at the Met were wonderful...well, some of us were not too keen about the Un Ballo PRODUCTION, but the singing was just out of this world. The traditional Aida was of course straight-up perfect. All the Scholars engaged in the discussions we had before and after the operas, and Explore New York guide Ray was very helpful with advice for getting around during our few free times. That Road Scholar provided us with the information and the subway agent to get an unlimited travel card for the week (and a permanent card to be mailed to us shortly) was worth the price of admission alone! Group Leader Molly and volunteer Pegie were also outstanding. BEST ADVICE from me...try to get seats C213 and C215 in the Family Circle - PERFECT acoustics and no seats in front to interfere with the looooong view to the stage. Oh, and for those who already do or plan to do the HD Live presentations...keep your HD tickets to get a 15% discount at the Met Box Office when you head to NYC again. AMH, Oxford, OH.

This program enhanced the enjoyment of opera at the Met. far more than my expectations. Not only did we discuss performance but also we learned far more about the art form than could be obtained by simply being a regular attender at performances. F.S. from Boston
