ACTIVITY LEVEL: Active
Love to learn in a small-group setting? This collection of programs has at most 10-24 participants.
See our Small Group programs.
EasyFor people looking to exercise their minds more than their bodies. There’s minimal walking and not too many stairs.
ModerateThese programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.

Our leader, Kathleen Leitgeb, gave us a good understanding of the history of Alaska, and guided us through it vast beauty. Some improvements could be made to the tour: 1) Road Scholar typically has university professors and/or government officials address the group, but this tour had none; 2) don't expect to see many animals -- in Denali we saw perhaps six bears, a few caribou, and no moose; 3) in Fairbanks we had no group bus -- the Denakkanaaga bus held 14 and the rest of the group were put in cabs or other transportation, with reliance often on the hotel van; 4) school buses were used, the buses for elementary school children, which were cramped for adults and had limited vision due to the high seat backs (I guess for security of school children). All in all, a nice trip with some wonderful fellow travelers, but hardly awesome.

Our leader, Kathleen Leitgeb, told us a story. The story of Alaska. It was the real story of Alaska told in a seamless manner from the extremes of Barrow to the north, the wonders of the interior at Denali and Kantishna and it's fascinating wildlife, all the way to Seward in the south watching the delighted marine life playing happily in their natural habitat. A trip that made me step "outside my box." I loved it and will not forget it.
