A great way to get a good taste of New Orleans, no pun intended! Learn about it and experience its unique culture.

Marilyn from Goleta, CA Number of programs attended: 8

My New Orleans experience was culturally diverse, historically fascinating, architecturally stimulating, musically haunting, and gastronomically fabulous. The guides and presenters were dynamos and we were eager to learn from them. What a week it was!!

Interesting week in NOLA with nice people. Our leader Clare was great. A bit too much time sitting in lectures for my taste but I did learn a lot about the city and culture and there was plenty of time to walk about the city, hear street musicians, and visit museums (some on our own time). I felt the walking to and from the bus, restaurants and around town with the group was fine for me, and nice not to be trapped on a bus more than necessary, but it turned out to be a bit too much for a couple of folks in the group who didn't seem to be in shape for that much walking, so be sure you feel comfortable walking several blocks at a time, often on uneven or cracked sidewalks. I do recommend this trip for first time visitors to NOLA who are interested in learning about the architecture, history and culture of the city.

The New Orleans trip was wonderful. The hotel was beautiful and right on Bourbon street but rooms were quiet. It was overly air conditioned in lecture rooms however but dressing in layers took care of that. There was adequate free time. vouchers for jazz clubs was a nice feature. As a first time visitor I now want to return. Dinner included restaurants were first class.

New Orleans has been on my travel list for 15 years; why did I wait? Must have been for this fascinating program.

This was our first Road Scholar program and it has set the bar very high for future trips (and there will be many more). This was also our first visit to New Orleans and we quickly became acclimated to the geography and culture of the area, wonderfully led by Clare. The lectures were interesting, the accommodations and meals amazing, and our fellow participants warm and welcoming.

We attended this program from November 15th to the 20th and had a great time. The hotel location was wonderful, the program instructors very informative, the music easily accessible, and the food fantastic. We had free time to see things we didn't know existed, but it would have been nice to stay longer. We met some wonderful people, some of whom we hope to see again in the future.

Patricia from Cambridge, MA Number of programs attended: 1

Great program! There is so much more to see & do. I will just have to go back to take it all in.

Beverly from Townsend, MA Number of programs attended: 3

The instructors were wonderful - personable, funny, knowledgeable, talented, and really kept our attention. The restaurants we visited served amazing food; be prepared to gain weight. We enjoyed the attractions of the city (e.g., St. Louis Cathedral, LA State Museums, etc.). We learned to have an appreciation of the music that was everywhere. We enjoyed the different architecture of the city, especially after our lecture with Nellie. The location of the hotel was convenient for organized activities and our free time. All in all, a fun trip!

The only way to see New Orleans!! The instructors and field trips were very informative and interesting. The food, accommodations, and entertainment were first class. And the participants and leaders were wonderful.

Malcolm from Sonora, CA Number of programs attended: 1

We thoroughly enjoyed the tour and the exposure to the culture of New Orleans. It is certainly a different place culturally from many in the U.S. that we have visited. The tour was well organized, and we got to see a lot of the city that we might not have gotten to on an independent visit. The other folks on the tour were good company, also. Highly recommended.

Our Group Leader, Joyce, made this program for us. She is a fantastic organizer and facilitator. The other instructors were very good as well, as was the food and learning activities. Excellent adventure!!

Elaine from Linden, MI Number of programs attended: 11

The more expensive trip, if affordable ,is worth the extra money for the location. Especially if you only intend to travel there once.

Elizabeth from Beaverton, OR Number of programs attended: 1

I just can't say enough about this amazing program from start to finish beginning with our "fearless leader" Joyce who is simply incredible and so well suited to her position! Add to that the BEST instructors (Anne and Joann are standouts!)the incredible food and accommodations, the marvelous participants (we were blessed with SUCH a great group!)and enough free time to explore the things we wanted to do on our own made it a picture perfect experience (not to mention the weather certainly cooperated during the trip, too). I highly recommend this program without reservation!

This is a phenomenal program. Call ahead and make sure you get Joyce Hanks for a group leader. She's the BEST group leader I've had in a number of trips with Elderhostel/Road Scholar Adventures. And, this is the best trip of many I've been on...

Entertaining, high caliber instructors pair with top-notch restaurants, jumping jazz clubs, and colorful, other-worldly Bourbon Street to make this a tour for your Bucket List. You won't believe what you'll experience in just five lively days in this endearing, enduring city.

This New Orleans program was a pleasant break from the blustery cold up North -the exciting din of NO jazz, the amazing cuisine, many excellent presenters on history, music, architecture, storm recovery and the amazing mix of cultures old and new made for a rewarding Road Scholar experience. I highly recommend this tour.

William from Plymouth, MA Number of programs attended: 2

We cannot say enough good things about the quality of this program. The coordinator and instructors, the meals in some of the city's best restaurants, the hotel located in the French Quarter, the tours of the city - all were excellent.

Mitchell from Spartanburg, SC Number of programs attended: 2
Date attended: 03/22/15 - 03/27/15
This program was outstanding in so many areas - the restaurants and food were amazing; each presentor was extremely knowledgeable and presented their material in a clear and 'fun' manner. So many aspects of New Orleans were covered in a well-paced format. Road Scholar took great care in making all aspects of this program '5 star'. One of the finest programs I have ever taken. Highly recommended!

Pamela from Smithtown, NY Number of programs attended:3 Date attended:03/08/15-03/13/15 My husband Bob and I enjoyed the program we attended in New Orleans. This is the third Road Scholar event that we have attended and it met with our approval on the whole. I didn't like the breakfasts very much and I wasn't impressed with the brunch on the last day. There were times when I felt rushed and I was surprised at this because the activity level was supposed to be easy. Although I thought our leader was a very nice person, I don't think she always had things under control. The lectures were excellent and I would recommend this program very highly.

Richard from Pasadena, CA Number of programs attended: 30

I attended the May 8 - 13 program also. I enjoyed the program, the participants and the city of New Orleans. I would like to have had another couple of days to explore the French Quarter. We went to some really good restaurants: Commander's Palace, Muriels, Bourbon St. Cafe. Food was outstanding. I skipped breakfast a couple of days because the food was just mediocre and the coffee shop in the hotel was a lot better. The lecturers were excellent, as usual on Road Scholar programs. I would recommend this program. I think it should be 7 days instead of 5 days.

Vicki from Albuquerque, NM Number of programs attended: 3

I attended the May 8-13th program in New Orleans. Overall, it was a good experience, but could have been better in some respects. Pro: loved these restaurants- Bourbon House, Commander's Palace, and Muriel's; 2 excellent lecturers- Nellie Watson and Joanne Sealy; the New Orleans Cooking School experience was fun; the music was wonderful, especially the street musicians, and Doreen Ketchen's talk and performance; enjoyed the field trip to the New Orleans Museum of Art and Sculpture Garden. Cons: the program leader was not a strong leader, in my view, though a very nice person; the place where we had breakfast, "Ole New Orleans Cookery", was mediocre; we had to buy coffee in the hotel cafe, if you wanted to have coffee before breakfast; the Mardi Gras Indian luncheon and lecture was disappointing- and I have no idea of why so much time was given to that vs. The Battle of New Orleans, or some other important part of New Orleans' history and culture. As I said, overall, I enjoyed this program and would recommend it. I really like Road Scholar and am scheduled for back-to-back trips in Italy in 6 weeks!

I LOVED this trip ~ it far exceeded my expectations in every way ~ beginning w/our wonderful leader, Joyce ~ our lovely elegant hotel right on Bourbon Street ~ lectures given by extremely knowledgeable and engaging speakers (every one of them) ~ add to that the delicious food (yum) and of course the music ~ Ahh yes, the wonderful New Orleans music everywhere you go !!!

George from Midlothian, VA Number of programs attended: 3

We cannot say enough how outstanding this program was. It was well organized, led by an excellent leader - Joyce - interesting and varied presentations by experts in their field who love their city. The hotel in the French Quarter put you almost in the center of things, but you do not need to linger on Bourbon Street because New Orleans has so much more to offer. You ate at some fine restaurants with great food and very attentive wait staff. There was the right mix of classes and free time which allowed you to explore on your own, like the WWII Museum or a ride on the Steamboat Natchez. There were plentiful vouchers for evenings at jazz clubs, a day trip to a museum on Jackson Square, and, of course, beignets at Cafe du Monde. While you see and do much with this program, in the end you may want to return on your own to either take in places you missed or revisit restaurants, clubs or other sites for further exploration.

New Orleans is a unique experience and our leader Joyce made it come alive for us. We had a lot of opportunities to listen to some great jazz, had some great food, and got the flavor of Bourbon Street.

I was a solo traveler on my first RoadScholar trip to New Orleans. My fellow travelers were friendly, welcoming and helped make it a super travel experience. With a wonderful guide and knowledgeable, charming instructors, we were destined for the best trip ever. The Big Easy has enriched our lives. Chris E. from CT

Our Royal Senesta Hotel - a gem of old-world elegance and beautiful appointments in contrast to raucous Bourbon Street scene. Kudos to all speakers and tour leader Joyce, for her organizational skills and graciousness. All activities worthwhile and enjoyable. Delightful presentations, excellent meals and service. Free time included Mississippi boat trip and World War II Museum. New Orleans is an important city from a historic, cultural and industrial standpoint and I hope it will continue to receive substantial funding from government, private and corporate sectors.

The great thing about a Road Scholar Signature City program is you start out a little overwhelmed but by the end you feel as if you really belong in that city. I am no longer the average tourist in New Orleans!

This was the first time we went with Road Scholar because we had not heard about it until a friend put our name on the mailing list. My only regret is that we did not know sooner of the wonderful programs available. We enjoyed everything about this program and would not hesitate for a second to recommend it highly to anyone interested. You will not be sorry.

In the aftermath of Katrina we tended to hear more bad news than good news on New Orleans. What a joy it was to interact with local people who love their special city and are keeping its culture alive. Much of historic New Orleans was untouched by the hurricane and has been lovingly preserved. Areas that were destroyed are coming back in innovative and creative ways. The Road Scholar experience gave me a whole new perspective on this truly unique and vibrant city.

This is an absolutely great program! It really captured how much more New Orleans is than Mardi Gras and Katrina which is what we see on TV. It captured the friendliness of the people and the pride they have in their city,

Diane from Martinez, CA Number of programs attended: 1

This was our first Road Scholar trip and we are already looking in the program catalog for our next. Can we find one as great as this one? Everything went smoothly from beginning to end. The lectures and outings were informative and entertaining. Even the weather cooperated with mild temperatures, sunny skies and no humidity. We used our free time to explore the French Quarter on our own. We discovered the Carrousel Bar at the Monteleone Hotel, we took a horse and buggy ride, and enjoyed the street music. One delightful band was even playing inside a hat shop! Kudos to Joyce, Anne, Nellie! Doreen, Joanne and Harriet for making this the trip we tout to all our friends.

Wendy from Coatesville, PA Number of programs attended: 1

I can't recommend Road Scholar's Signature Cities Program highly enough! We went to New Orleans, a city I had never particularly cared to visit, thinking it was all Mardi Gras partiers and bare boobs! This week completely endeared the city to me. Through the Road Scholar classes I gained a real insight into this amazing city and its wonderfully gracious people. The delectable food, the pulsing music, the engaging citizens of the city and the fascinating local history.....all were permanently absorbed by my brain and infused into my soul. New Orleans...and Road Scholar...are THE BEST!!! Put this program, or any Road Scholar program on your "bucket list." You will be so glad you did!

Dick from Wheaton, IL Number of programs attended: 2

We loved this program. We were situated in the heart of the French Quarter, just a few steps from raucous Bourbon Street. Our lecturers were all knowledgeable, polished and passionate. We particularly enjoyed Doreen's introduction to New Orleans jazz-- she is not only a gifted raconteur but a superb musician as well. We toured not only the French Quarter. but also the Garden District, local cemeteries, and the outlying areas hit hard by Katrina. Each night we dined in one of New Orleans' premier restaurants -- if you didn't pick up a few extra pounds you weren't on the same trip as we were -- and each evening we had vouchers to sample some of the city's incomparable music. Helpful maps and suggestions guided us to a host of options during our unscheduled time. Finally, Joyce, our tour guide, was the perfect host and organizer, always helpful and available, and never (outwardly) flustered. We have traveled many places in the world, but this was my favorite trip ever. That's saying quite a lot.

The hotel itself, the Royal Sonesta, and its location were excellent, right in the heart of Bourbon Street and the French Quarter. Be advised, Bourbon St. is loud, brash and X-rated. Traffic on Bourbon St. is blocked off near the hotel and 2 police on horseback lend a welcome air of security to the enveloping noise and revelry. The food was outstanding and conducive to weight gain. Beware! The educational programs were all entertaining and educational especially Joanne Sealy on New Orleans writers and playwrights, Harriet on New Orleans cooking, and Nellie Watson on NO architecture. I thought every evening free and 2 afternoons free were a little too much free time and I would have preferred 2 added evening programs and one less free afternoon.

Corrie from San Mateo, CA Number of programs attended: 38
Date attended: 10/05/14 - 10/10/14
Our 37th program and as always it was very good, our scale is our wittness but it was a lot more than just food. The leader, Joyce, and the speakers were outstanding on topics such as history of NO architechture of homes, authors (I have to name this presenter, Joanne Sealy, her outstanding talk alone satisfied us), cooking and Mardi Gras. The talk about NO music need serious improvement which, I think, our good leader will get to soon. We paid a visit to the wonderful sculpture park and adjoining European art gallery, Actually a program dealing with New Orleans artists would have been more appropriate than European art. Road scholar please consider this issue.

Road Scholar's response:
We greatly appreciate your feedback and suggestions. I can confirm that we have already found a new instructor for the music portion of this program moving forward.

This was a wonderful trip. Leader and educators were perfect, classes were great, accommodations luxurious, and food was the best. New Orleans is such an amazing city. The superlatives may seem trite, but they are all true. Would take this trip again in a heartbeat. Definitely plan to return to this city.

Fabulous trip to the Crescent City with wonderful guides and classes geared to in depth understanding of the culture of New Orleans, which enhanced the whole experience for me. The dining experience was stupendous & fattening ! Met some wonderful people with whom I hope to continue communicating with. Who knows, we may all meet again on another wonderful Road Scholar trip in the future.

A most magical experience in a "foreign" country so close to home. The pulsating spirit and soul of the city of New Orleans is infectious and the Road Scholar introduction to its very nature is incomparable. Who would have known that so much joie de vivre (joy of life) is still found in this very battered. We community. We simply must return. You must go!

Informative overviews of the culture, literature, architecture and food that is uniquely New Orleans. Joyce, our group leader was outstanding. The Royal Sonesta Hotel where we stayed is located on Bourbon Street, in the heart of the French Quarter. Our inside rooms were quiet, comfortable and wonderfully decorated. The restaurants were amazing and varied so everyone found food selections that ranged from adventurous to familiar. The music and historical options filled every spare minute. We had a marvelous time.
