Road Scholar
Program #1183RJ
6 Days | 5 Nights
ACTIVITY LEVEL: Moderate
Road Scholar has thousands of educational adventures to choose from. A good way to narrow down our list is to browse our collection of "Most Popular" programs.
See all of our Most Popular programs.
EasyFor people looking to exercise their minds more than their bodies. There’s minimal walking and not too many stairs.
ModerateThese programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.

The "Art collectors and Their Collections" tour in Los Angeles was well organized and planned, the group leader was experienced, calm and helpful. I enjoyed the museums and gardens at the Huntington the most. Here I am enjoying the waterfall in the Japanese garden. I would not hesitate to join another adventure through Road Scholar.

This was my first trip with RS; I was a bit hesitant about doing a group tour. I must say I was pleasantly surprised. I enjoyed every part of this trip; the people, the museums visited, the food and hotel, the service was excellent. Jill ,the tour leader was wonderful the bus driver was also very good. I will sign up for more trips!

I took the "Art Collectors + Their Collections" tour in L.A. recently and absolutely loved it! Good hotel, wonderful venues and great people. The Getty Center must be seen to be believed; ditto for the Huntington Library + Botanical Gardens. I highly recommend this tour.

FOR ANYONE WHO LIKES BOTH ART AND ARCHITECTURE, THIS IS AN EXCITING AND WONDERFUL PROGRAM. NOT ONLY DOES ONE GET EXPOSURE TO GREAT ART AND ARCHITECTURE, BUT ALSO TO EXPERTS IN THE FIELD WHO HELP ONE APPRECIATE WHAT ONE SEES.

My first outing with Road Scholar and I enjoyed it thoroughly. Very nice hotel with terrific breakfast buffet included. Downtown LA more interesting than I expected although eateries near the hotel are limited. Liked the ability to roam at will in the museums after a brief introduction tour. Never enough time to see it all but just right for not being overtired at day's end. Really appreciated the bus driver in the LA traffic so I could relax & enjoy. Wish there was time to include a another day to visit Getty Villa and travel home on Saturday. Excellent RS rate from hotel to hold-over another night. Saved enough airfare by flying Saturday to cover the extra hotel night.

What they say is what you'll get. Hit the road and become a scholar.

This was a very interesting and organized program. Visiting different art museums in LA each of 4 days was possible and enjoyable with Road Scholar. The hotel was very comfortable. The meals were fine, though we had to buy lunches 3 of the 4 days spent at the museums. ( I would prefer to pay enough registration to cover all meals.) But I would certainly recommend this very popular and available program to anyone who loves art museums.

This was a wonderful introduction to the Road Scholar Travel Program. I will likely plan another adventure.

If you are an art lover, sign up for this trip. All the museums are astounding, particularly the Norton Simon and the Getty Center. The speakers were very informative and gave much context to the visit overall.

This was a wonderful trip for art lovers. Thanks to Peg for being a great program coordinator. Two tips: 1) Check out attending the LA Philharmonic at the unique Walt Disney Concert Hall (just a couple blocks from the hotel) -- try to get the padded "bench" seats for $23.75 each (total) right behind the orchestra so you can watch the conductor & the orchestra; 2) Don't miss Paul's wrap-up lecture on Friday morning--his presentation of LA "money, power, & art" depicts a scenario that would be worthy of Hollywood!

I just returned from the Art Collectors and Their Collections trip in Los Angeles. This was a great experience of each day a new museum collection. We also were able to do some exploring on our own so the best of both worlds. This was invigorating for the mind and now I want to take a painting class.

I enjoyed the program, especially the lectures, and although I am handicapped, I didn't find the museums too difficult (used a wheelchair in two and walked with walker the other two). You can keep it "easy" as far as I am concerned. Peg was wonderful! I agree that it is really "cheap" not to offer wi-fi free in the hotel!

for a museum aficianado like me, the experience in l.a. was first class, and satisfying. a little challenging ,but always good.

The Norton Simon Museum just blew me away. We did not have enough time there - I never did get to the Asian gallery. The hotel was under renovation, so we had to move our room (we attended two Road Scholars - this one, and the Signature City Los Angeles) but they gave us a room on the penthouse floor - rooms were no different, just higher. Also, note the hotel charges $9.95 a day for WIFI, with no areas of the hotel with free access. (Usually they give you free access in the lobby). Good organization on the leaders part, and no problems. The speakers were excellent. Good powerpoint presentations on the collectors, which helped you understand what they intended to accomplish with their acquisitions, and appreciate and understand the museums when you were there. I agree with Eileen - we had about six people with mobility problems out of 36, and it is very difficult to get around in a museum if you have trouble walking. I think it should be rated moderate, as there is a LOT of walking if you want to see the exhibits.

Excellent program and speakers. It would take a year of college courses to receive what we learned in a week! The hotel was ideal and the staff was very friendly and helpful. Tour leader was very experienced. She even made the bus rides interesting.

Eileen from Paradise, CA Number of programs attended: 2

from CA I totally enjoyed this trip! It was just what I wanted, lots to see, learning so much, well planned, well provided for, good company. The different museums demonstrated what can be done with different funding. My one comment would be so say that the trip should not be rated as "easy"--that is misleading for those with difficulty walking, and there was lots of it.

Perfect accommodations. All the museums were worthwhile and all but the county museum were top notch. The county museum has top notch parts but was more eclectic. More guidance would have helped to pick and choose. The docent at the county museum scolded the participants. She was not the right person for this job.
