ModerateThese programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.

Stimulating and forward looking--when the news came out about Obama's desire to better understand the brain, this course prepared the listeners in the best ways possible to the challenges and better knowledge ahead to deal with neurological and a myriad of other disorders. Thank you for providing us with access to some of the best minds in the country. They were all generous in their sharing of years of research.

This program was a mixed bag. Seven of the lecturers were great. The others not so great. Some of the "hands-on" activities seemed more suitable for middle-school students than for adults. The Primate Center coordinator (Diana Gordon) and the Road Scholar tour director (Linda Wanless) were efficient, intelligent, and nice. The bus left the hotel at 8:15 am each morning to be at the Primate Center by 9 am. Three days were spent til 4:30 pm at the Primate Center in Beaverton, the other day at Oregon Health & Science University in Portland. I felt trapped at the Primate Center, since the only transportation back to the hotel mid-day was a $45 taxi ride. (One participant opted out of two days at the Primate Center; another participant opted out of one day at the Primate Center.) Wednesday was the worst, with five one-hour lectures at the Primate Center and one evening lecture at the hotel, with the only activity being a half block walk to the Primate Center cafeteria at lunch. There were no mid-morning or mid-afternoon snacks and/or tea or coffee on any of the days. I was often hungry and exhausted by mid-afternoon. On Wednesday one lecturer told us about the need for us to be active during the day and a nutitionist told us about what we should eat. Our meals during the program often did not follow the nutritionist's recommendations. The hotel (Courtyard Marriott at Lloyd Center) was quite comfortable, but located across the river from downtown Portland. The hotel was surrounded by fast food restaurants and busy streets so there was no place that it was easy or interesting to walk. I wish the advance information had told me that I could get a refrigerator and a microwave in my room and that there were coin laundry facilities at the hotel.

This is a fabulous program with a high educational level. The instructors are knowledgeable and eager to help us understand a concept. The labs were professional and lots of fun with hands on activities. If you enjoy the area of science, THIS PROGRAM IS FOR YOU.

This was a great program. It was a lot of information to absorb in a compacted period of time. My only suggestion for improvement would be to space out the lectures more with physical activity in between, whether it be more simulated hands on at the primate center, or more getting away from the center to do some walking or sightseeing. I would suggest offering it in the fall as the weather would probably be more conducive to getting out and about. Diana is super at her job and put a wonderful group of scientists/lecturers together for us. I wouldn't have missed this trip for anything and often talk with friends about things I learned.

I hope you will continue to give this program. Not only was it a nice excuse to visit Portland, the content area is super. Group leader, Mary Jean, kept things running smoothly and didn't get offended I didn't participate in the getting-to-know-you game at orientation. Helpful and courteous hotel staff at great location with easy public transportation to/from airport and downtown. Diana Gordon is the greatest director of program. If I had science teachers like Diana, my life would have taken a different path. We had famous/prominent speakers from the science world. If they weren't the greatest dynamic orators, Diana was always there to chime in and help facilitate to keep our interest at its zenith. Great trips to visit primates and similated hands on activities. Buffet breakfasts and catered buffet lunches are good. I didn't eat most of sit down dinners(they last too long), but of those I had, they were good. Everyone's physical abilities from inept to adept were accommodated throughout program. Well done! Thank you.
