Thoroughly enjoyed it...This was our first Road Scholar experience and it was a pure pleasure. The quality of the program and the activities exceeded our expectations. The week's activities were well planned and executed. And the beach was nice as well. --John and Judith U

This program takes the idea of history and breathes life, interest, and excitement into the whole experience. The re-enactors were very accomplished actors, who were mesmerizing and engaging. We experienced history in a whole new way. All the Rhodes Scholar staff were friendly, knowledgeable and went the extra mile for us. The hotel is on the beach, very comfortable, very accommodating. The beach there is beautiful. There are many interesting things to do in the leisure time. Well worth it!

Yvonne from Southport, NC Number of programs attended: 5
Date attended: 01/31/16 - 02/05/16
I enjoyed the re-enactors and their enthusiasm very much, but there was more sitting and listening to lectures than I really wanted. The program did adjust my "first settlement: Pilgrims, 1620" point of view! Caterer was not great. Hotel had difficulty keeping the hot drinks more than luke warm.

Barbara from stuart, FL Number of programs attended: 1

Great program, lovely city with very interesting history. The presenters were both knowledgeable and passionate about the subject matter, which made the presentations lively, interesting and fun. The organizers were great-Nancy and Jackie were always there for us and were very informative-in addition to them being lovely people who took the best care of us. The hotel was very clean and comfortable and located right on the beach-a real plus-along with coffee and tea at all times and warm cookies in the evening in the lounge.(Yum). We ate at local restaurants and also a few evenings in the hotel itself-all meals were great! Nutritious food, clean and warm surroundings. Daily breakfast was also at the hotel, which was also quite good. Hot and cold buffet.

My husband and I found this to be a most enjoyable program. So much to see and do, with well organized, fun and interesting presentations and field trips. From the beautiful Basilica Cathedral, Flagler College and Ponce de Leon Park, to name a few, it was a great experience. (I'm still waiting for results from a drink from the "Fountain of Youth.") The Hampton Inn was located right on the beach...with management that cared about our comfort. Our leaders, Nancy and Jackie, were organized, enthusiastic and devoted to making this a memorable time for us all.

Cleveland from Newton, IA Number of programs attended: 3
Date attended: 01/10/16 - 01/15/16
Three things made this a particularly strong program. First, the leadership and presenters were excellent. Nancy was well-organized and approachable at all times. The decision to use re-enactors as historical characters kept things interesting. Second, the hotel was accommodating and comfortable at all times. It has ocean beach access, a draw for us northerners who come to Florida in winter. The food was good, the meeting room comfortable, and our guest room clean and comfortable as well. Third, the program allows one to visit pretty much all of the historical sites in St.Augustine. In addition, shopping and food are plentiful and excellent. Our group was smaller than usual (18). This made for great camaraderie and the chance to hear the stories of just about everyone.

Paul from Delray Beach, FL Number of programs attended: 13
Date attended: 01/10/16 - 01/15/16
Great programs, especially for history buffs. Early American history is only part of the story, concentrating on the New England states and Virginia. Very rich history in St. Augustine area at 'colonial' times and in the last 140 years of putting Florida on the map. Excellent presenters.

Tonya from Bolingbrook, IL Number of programs attended: 1

Tonya - Number programs attended:1 Dates: October 2015 program. I had a glorious time while attending this program. I got an in-depth understanding of Flagler College and its history and thoroughly enjoyed the instructors as well as the other attendees. I would definitely take another Rhodes Scholar program.

I very much enjoyed my Road Scholar's trip to St Augustine. The city is quite an amazing place with lots to see - interesting buildngs and museums. With a combination of lectures an d field trips, this tour makes the city come alive. Those is charge are professional, organized and thoughtful. There is also the benefit of staying in a pleasant hotel by the ocean with a chance to swim and walk on the beach - a definite plus if you live in a land locked and colder part of the country

Joseph from Mount Juliet, TN Number of programs attended: 1
Date attended: 04/12/15 - 04/17/15
This was our first Road Scholar experience. We would have never learned all that we did had we taken this trip on our own. This was a totally exceptional experience! We were immersed in every aspect of the culture and history of St Augustine, and especially enjoyed the dramatic, costumed presentations of the important people of the time, especially the music and literary characters. We were blessed with a totally delightful group leader who made us all feel as if we were part of her extended family. We would definitely look to Road Scholar for our next travel adventure.

Prepare to be enchanted! I experienced a new sense of gratitude towards all.. who had the vision of developing St. Augustine and now towards those who preserve this charming, full of history at every turn, "jewel by the ocean." YOU will want to stay long after the program is over or return and again..and again..

Den and Jan from Clayton, CA Number of programs attended: 1 Date attended: 03/01/15 - 03/06/15 This was our first Road Scholar program and we picked a great one! It presented 450 years of St. Augustine history from a variety of angles. We knew going in that St. Augustine was the oldest city in the US, but did not realize the breadth of the history and culture.......who knew that the city played a part in the silent film age. Our favorite part was a visit from "Henry Flagler", who described his multiple business accomplishments, but also tenderly revealed his human side. Walking the narrow streets, observing the archeological digs and visiting the old Ponce de Leon Hotel were more meaningful because of the presentations by our experts. Our tour director was knowledgable, humorous and gently urged us to stay on schedule. Because of our wonderful experience with Road Scholar we feel we have a personal connection to this fascinating city.

Mary from Glen Rock, PA Number of programs attended: 6

This program was interesting, informative and very very enjoyable. We enjoyed the program, the presenters, and especially the Group Leader Gill. We highly recommend this program. This is St. Augustine's 450th anniversary year, and we are pleased to say that we enjoyed Road Scholar's assistance with helping us to enjoy it. Come visit and see for yourself.

This program was both enjoyable and informative about St.Augustine, FL. Recommend anyone who is interested in exploring the oldest colony during its 450th anniversary year to attend this program.

Linda from Bedford, PA Number of programs attended: 55
Date attended: 02/15/15 - 02/20/15
We enjoyed this program and really saw nothing wrong with the hotel. The food was good and our room was quite comfortable. Personnel were very friendly and helpful. There was a lot of history and it was taught in an entertaining manner. Our only suggestion would have been to include the Fountain of Youth and the Oldest House on one of the field trips. There was some miscommunication with the bus company on the first day ending up with all of us having to ride back in an open trolley. This was uncomfortable for some folks. Personally, we thought it was a hoot. That situation was the bus company and not the Road Scholar folks. Having attended more than 50 Road Scholar programs, we can say very few are absolutely perfect but they come quite close.

Gus from Des Moines, IA Number of programs attended: 2
Date attended: 02/15/15 - 02/20/15
The quality of this program was a real disappointment after the wonderful previous experience we had in Savannah. The hotel was in need of updating. Many details of the planning and execution of the program were second rate. Could not recommend this one to others.

Road Scholar's response:
Thank you for your comments. We are sorry this program did not meet your expectations. Please know that due to participant feedback we have moved to a different, improved hotel for this program starting in the fall of 2015.

Having lived in North Central Florida for over 40 years, I though I knew enough about the area to safely guide visitors around the area and educate foreigners about the culture. I am totally convinced that We have lived in blissful oblivion. What we learned about the history and culture as it developed since the 16th century far exceeds the knowledge of the common Floridian. The tapestry of cultural influences will continue to emerge as we further delve into details about our heritage. This program is invaluable and highly recommended to native Floridians as well as out of state visitors. Even overseas visitors will be surprisingly impressed with the mixture of European cultures mingled with native American influences that have influenced the St Augustine area. This will forever change the view of United States as being an British colony. It was much more than that and the lingering legacy of the many peoples who who put their mark on the tableau of North Florida will inspire generations to come. We wish we had been able to take this course a long time ago. Thanks you road Scholar for an unforgettable adventure.

Martin from Poughkeepsie, NY Number of programs attended: 6
Date attended: 02/22/15 - 02/27/15
This program exceeded my expectations and taught me a great deal about the history and multiple cultures that contributed to the growth of this oldest continuously occupied city in North America. While the Fountain of Youth may be a myth, Henry Flagler, the visionary who promoted Florida and put St. Augustine back on the tourist map, came alive in ways I would not have imagined. This was my first Road Scholar program - I loved it all! I learned so much and enjoyed having all the details of where to stay, where to eat and what to see layed out expertly. And the people I met were exceptional. I will definitely be on the road with Road Scholar again soon!

Adrienne from Evanston, IL Number of programs attended: 15
Date attended: 02/08/15 - 02/13/15
My husband and I loved this program, our vivacious group leader Jill, and the varied speakers who enlightened us about St. Augustine's history and culture. The activities were first-rate, including lectures, musical and dramatic performances, and tours, with the program geared to layering our knowledge so that one activity logically followed and built upon another. It was one of the best-planned of all the Road Scholar trips we've attended. The hotel shows its age, but we followed the sage advice to reserve an ocean-view room in the newer section. It cost a premium to do this, but it was well worth it.

Syd from Evanston, IL Number of programs attended: 15
Date attended: 02/08/15 - 02/13/15
If you are interested in history, take this course. We had lectures, first-person speakers in costumes, a singer/storyteller, a musical historian, field trips, DVDs and a final dinner with food from all the different groups that inhabited St. Augustine. We looked at St Augustine from many different directions, and its history came alive.

Anthony from Annapolis, MD Number of programs attended: 1

I would definitely check reviews of the hotel before registering for this class. The Holiday Isle Hotel was unacceptable. The course and content were handled well though.

Road Scholar's response:
Thank you for your comments. Please know that due to participant feedback we have moved to a different, improved hotel for this program starting in the fall of 2015.

dont take trip in January as weather is very very uncertain. beware of hotel location as it is away from St Augustine and you need a taxi for any indepenfdant touring.

Road Scholar's response:
Thank you for your comments. The weather is indeed unpredictable in January. The hotel on this program is located at the beach, rather than in the downtown. If you wish to pursue a downtown St Augustine experience, please see program #21668 Celebrate St. Augustine at the Historic Casa Monica.

St. Augustine, with Susan Brody as group leader and particularly outstanding presenters, is a Road Scholar program my wife and I thoroughly enjoyed. We came as part of a group of military friends from 50 years ago who enjoy the structure and education that the Road Scholar programs offer as a venue for our annual reunions. We enjoy renewing our friendships but just as much enjoy bonding with the very interesting people who attend Road Scholar. Our St. Augustine experience was superb on all counts -- and the participants, setting, accommodations, HEALTHY food selections and group leadership all were A+.

Robert from Annandale, VA Number of programs attended: 7
Date attended: 10/12/14 - 10/17/14
What a wonderful experience this was! The program was great, the location is great, and Susan Brody (the Program Manager) is wonderful! I was one of 13 participants who met in the army 50 years ago, and get together every year (usually at a Road Scholar Program) for a reunion and chance to learn about something new. The instructors were great, the city incredibly beautiful and reeking with history, and the other participants were a boat-load of fun. I recommend this program highly, and want to thank Eckerd College for making it possible!

My mom and I had THE BEST TIME in St. Augustine. Not only is the city beautiful, the people who hosted us were caring and hard working. We learned so much and had a great time with the "Army guys and gals" What a hoot. If you visit St. Augustine, make sure you sign up for a class lead by Susan Brody. She is a wonderful teacher, filled with passion and grace. She'll go out of her way to ensure you leave with a love of her city!

This program had a lot of great reviews which led us to choose it. The reviews were right. It was wonderful. St. Augustine is a wonderful place to see. The hotel right on the beach was really clean, well kept up, and had a great staff. The food was tops. We loved everything about the program. The many different presenters were the best we have ever had. Jackie our coordinator really made the week a lot of fun. TIP: Come a day or two early or stay a day or two at the end to enjoy the beach. The location can't be beat.

Norma from Sun City Center, FL Number of programs attended: 1

This was my first Road Scholar trip and I thoroughly enjoyed it. All the presenters were excellent and had a vast knowledge in their fields. They were personable and held our interest throughout the program. The accommodations were also comfortable. It was a great beginning and I think I will sign up again for another program.

Kathleen from Latrobe, PA Number of programs attended: 9

What an immersion in history and a culture! I had never heard of Henry Flagler and his contributions to transportation and tourism prior to this trip and my prior one to Key West. The experiences in both rounded out my understanding of the region. Gerald Brody is a jewel. As he reminded us participants, the presentations are not repetitive but are reinforcements. Jackie Dews and the staff of Holiday Isle went out of their way to make our experience memorably pleasant.

Annie from Tulsa, OK Number of programs attended: 11

I highly recommend this program. Not only is St Augustine a beautiful old city but the coordinators managed to enhance the experience with outstanding speakers and performances.

Just returned from this wonderful program in St. Augustine and listening to a CD by orchestral pianist Gerry Brody, whose presentation on the importance of music throughout all cultures, and in particular, in Florida was a highlight. Each presenter was unique and engaging, and one comes away with an in-depth understanding of the history of St. Augustine. This is an experience not to be missed--and the beach is right outside your door!

Maggie from Kansas City, MO Number of programs attended: 1

I found the presenters well prepared and intensely engaged with their subject matter and the result was a very attentive and enthusiastic audience. This was my first experience with Road Scholars but I'm sure it will not be my last. I especially enjoyed interacting with the other scholars who were most kind and welcoming to me. I hope to renew many of these friendships in future programs. Maggie Adair

The Eckerd College “St. Augustine: 450 Years of History Comes Alive” program was so excellent, that I fell in love with the area and booked a second program the same year. To my absolute delight, the second program was just as fresh and bright and interesting as the first program. Both leaders were excellent communicators, knowledgeable, accommodating and fun to be with!!! I have never been a history buff, but this particular program made the history of the area vibrant and fascinating! I came away both times with an appreciation and a new value for those dedicated people who share their knowledge of the history of the area, through their own expertise. Included among those people who enhanced our experience were artists, musicians, actors portraying different historical characters of the area, a Professor of Photography, and a narrated tour of the waters by the Captain of the Victory. Their love of the area inspired me. It is truly my favorite program of all, and I would return for a third time with pleasure and without hesitation!!

Arthur from Burke, VA Number of programs attended: 3

My third Road Scholar program in St. Augustine was fabulous. Susan was outstanding, attentive, funny, and inspirational. She made us all feel quite at home. Art

Diane from Chicago, IL Number of programs attended: 1

The St. Augustine program was a terrific experience, and I can't speak highly enough of two people in particular: our tour coordinator, Susan Brody, and her exceptionally talented husband, pianist and opera buff Gerald Brody. Susan's easy manner, personal warmth and organizational skills kept everything humming along and everyone on the tour happy, while Gerald's encyclopedic knowledge of music and engaging stories about the musical history of St. Augustine made his presentation a standout among a generally excellent group of instructors. All in all, this tour was a delightful experience, and St. Augustine is a gem among American locations to visit. I highly recommend this program to anyone contemplating a Road Scholar trip.

This was my first RS program and I loved it. It was good value for the money, very well coordinated, the group leader, Jill, was awesome, the programs and presenters were knowledgeable and interesting. I learned so much about St. Augustine, its history, culture, and people. The Holiday Isles Oceanfront was not in the historic district, but this was not a negative to me. The transportation was included to the historic district. The resort itself was older, but clean and well kept The staff was great, friendly, warm and willing to do anything to accommodate guests. The food was fine, not gourmet but well prepared and presented buffet style. The banquet host, Gary, was highly visible and very concerned that everyone be satisfied with their meals. The food service staff were all pleasant and friendly. Overall it was an A+ trip. I would do it again.
