My husband and I didn't begin playing golf until we were in our 50's and we didn't start with good lessons though we should have. Hoping to compensate for our less than stellar entree into the golfing world, we went to 4 golfing programs searching for the "magic bullet" that would make us better golfers. Two years ago we found what we needed at the 4th program, which was better than all three of the others combined. That something, rather someone, was Shelby Smith, a golf pro who specializes in working with seniors. We learned so much from him that we signed up for this program a second time and that gave us another quantum leap forward. Now we can't get enough of the game and our scores are getting better and better. Judy O, Sunriver, OR

This was my 13th Road Scholar/ElderHostel program and the 5th with golf as the primary focus. It was a repeat of the 4th which I attended here 2 years ago. I said then that this had been the best of the 4 programs I had attended, learning more at this one than the other 3 put together. This year’s group had about the same range of golfing experience represented as the last one had and I suspect that again, everyone came away with a feeling that they had picked up good pointers to improve their game. The lead instructor, Shelby Smith, started the first individual coaching session with questions about whether or not we had any physical problems that he needed to be aware of. His assistant instructors did likewise and that information led to helping each of us to modify our grip, posture, and swing to take account of any such problems. In my case I was given help with altering my swing to avoid injury to my “tender” lower back. He can (and did) make all of us better golfers in spite of the aches and pains that many of us seniors live with. Dave O, Oregon

This is one of the best golfing experiences that I have participated in. The head instructor, Shelby Smith, is one of the most talented instructors I have worked with. He was surrounded with other excellent golf pros so all participants had individualized instruction. What we learned in practice was complemented by a detailed notebook. We had a nice mix of morning instruction and then golf on the courses in the afternoon. Evening lectures were very good and interesting. I enjoyed every minute and learned a lot. Myrtle Beach is a delightful place to be!

John & Ellen from Tn/ Programs attended-2 / This program was excellent. We both enjoy improving our golf, and the instruction we received really helped. The demonstrations and practice made sense. Shelby Smith has the senior golfer at heart throughout the event.
