Road Scholar
Program #20453RJ
19 Days | 18 Nights
ACTIVITY LEVEL: Easy
EasyFor people looking to exercise their minds more than their bodies. There’s minimal walking and not too many stairs.
ModerateThese programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.

I chose this program because of Road Scholar, the Panama Canal and Crystal Cruise and it was an enjoyable time. It was a different type of Road Scholar since the group was together for the RS programs on "sea days" and dinner besides the one excursion in Cartegena. Our program leader, Terry, was a delight to listen to as she is so enthusiastic and Valerie, tour leader, was equally friendly and helpful. After the rocky start that Ursula described, it was an enjoyable trip. We enjoyed all of our excursions and were on the Cartegena bus with Judy. I can't say enough about the work that the RS travel dept did to get us to the ship. We were lucky and flew to Charleston as we hadn't been able to get to NYC.

We live in Southern California and RS travel dept kept us current regarding change of flight plans from LAX to NY then another change of plans to Charleston. The Monday morning phone call then the e mail updates were great. We heard many stories from non-RS passengers who were stuck in NY w/o travel agent/Crystal help -long bus rides, renting cars, etc etc. but heard great stories from our fellow RS passengers who were stuck in NY. We love Crystal Cruise Lines (our 5th trip with them) so this was a perfect match for our 30th RS trip. Referring to Ursula's comments, we had attended another RS sponsored trip on QM2 so we knew what to expect (classes and dinner w/fellow RS participants but free time on the ship to mingle and participate in other activities) We apparently had the better guide on our Cartagena shore excursion. Sorry to say that it seems that all the shore excursions we signed up for that were "easy" and were tours of the various ports all had too many "shopping" stops. We enjoyed our submarine and sail boat excursions. We had great RS escort (Valerie) and great lectures from Terry. I would not hesitate recommending this trip to anyone who wants luxury cruising combined with an RS program

Storm Sandy made boarding the Crystal Symphony in New York City impossible, but Road Scholar did admirable work in ferrying those participants, who had been able to reach Manhattan before the storm hit, to Charleston, SC, and providing overnight stays in Alexandria, VA, and at an elegant historic hotel in Charleston, all expenses paid. The RS docent's lectures were of high quality, but the RS-provided sightseeing tour in Cartagena left much to be desired (at least for those in one of the buses) in that the guide was not sufficently proficient in English and tended to stop for extended periods where "things" were being sold instead of providing more time to explore the historic city center. (The same tour seems to be offered during the "World Academy" cruise in January 2013.) Although participants reveled in the Symphony's luxury, the non-stop programming offered by the ship tended to dilute the effectiveness of land-based RS programs, in which a group is together and shares in the benefits of day-long learning.
