This was a very relaxed birding tour in an unusual environment expertly led by Tom and Matt. Each morning we had a pre-breakfast stroll around Portal village with many good sightings in the early morning light. Many of the local residents allow visitors to enter their gardens and observe the birds at their feeders; we took full advantage of these facilities. The longest walk of the week was an out and back stroll of about 4 miles on a disused road, this was in the valley of Cave Creek Canyon. Scenically this is the highlight of the tour it is also home territory of several Elegant Trogons and we were rewarded with good sightings. However, the bird of the week was a Mexican Whip-poor-will seen perching at dusk. The lodge is comfortable but basic; the restaurant/café serves good portions from a varied menu of home cooked food, the staff are helpful and friendly.

This was our first Road Scholar program and our first visit to Arizona--we would do both again! We are extremely pleased with Road Scholar, and we anticipate doing another trip in the not-too-distance future. Our two leaders, Matt and Robin, made the trip for us--as well as the great variety of birds they found and identified for us. Jim and Sheila, Missouri

An excellent 1st Road Scholar experience for me. We saw a total of over 130 species, with Robin and Matt, our guides, trying to help everyone see them all. There were 17 participants with a wide range of birding skills, ages. There is quite a bit of time in the vans, but that's necessary to get us to the best birding spots. The Portal Peak Lodge is a modest place, but it's truly set in the middle of paradise. I would recommend this trip highly.

Robin and Matt were very good guides and I was able to see and identify a number of birds that I had never seen before. As an interested, but not expert, birdwatcher, I was still able to keep up and enjoy the trip.

We saw over 130 species, and added scores to our life list. However, if you are looking for a specific bird, do your homework, and choose your session accordingly. Many target birds are migrants and may not be there yet, or may have already gone.
