ACTIVITY LEVEL: Active
Road Scholar has thousands of educational adventures to choose from. A good way to narrow down our list is to browse our collection of "Most Popular" programs.
See all of our Most Popular programs.
EasyFor people looking to exercise their minds more than their bodies. There’s minimal walking and not too many stairs.
ModerateThese programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.

This was an experience of being immersed in colonial history that will enrich us from now on

This Road Scholar Tour was a surprise to us. It exceeded our expectations in every way: itineraries, lectures, tours, guides, accommodations, food, and participants. An extremely good group. Better all around than the higher end tours we've taken in the past. And less expensive.

Too heavily regimented for us. Too much time in the classroom and not enough time on sites. Also, too little personal free exploring time. Most speakers and performers were excellent. The hotel was awful to say the least and I have attached representative photos of the property. As this was our first RS experience, we doubt we will schedule another after our next obligation in December. We aren't expecting a 5* hotel. At the same time it should be well maintained, free of offensive odors mentioned by several participants and clean. The Clarion Williamsburg has none of this. Who knows the condition of possible future accommodations.

Th e material that you sent before the program contained several extra useless pages that we had to copy if we copied the material. The fact that we copy saves you money- that is fine, but when we copy you should not include extra blank page for use to copy!

I thought this was a terrific program. Never been much of a history buff, ths now well-versed! This program was so enriching and fascinationg to me. So glad I attended, learned so much and valued the total experience. Enactors, entertainers, interpreters, archaeologists and docents were a wealth of knowledge with warm, kind and helpful "teaching" styles. The Clarion had a friendly serving staff. I'd have to say this was the best Elderhostel/Road Scholar trip I've ever been on 95% of which have all been terrific! Can't wait for the next one! Decisions, decisions, decisions ...

This was our first Road Scholar experience, and we thoroughly enjoyed it. The lecturers, the performers, the scheduling, the accommodations, the food, the pace, and the director were all perfect for us. We highly recommend it.

We participated in the April 28, 2013 program and enjoyed it very much! The lecturers were all knowledgeable and most were very effective speakers. All the performers were outstanding! Our field trips were Historic Jamestowne, Jamestown Settlement, Colonial Williamsburg (CW) and Yorktown, in order of attendance. We loved Colonial Williamsburg and wished we had two days there at least, instead of Yorktown which was our least favorite. The problem with Yorktown was it was rushed. We saw a film at the Visitor's Center but had no time to explore. We felt there should have been more time there or drop that trip entirely in favor of another CW day. The food was quite good. The accomodations were adequate though this Clarion needs some updating. For example there was no microphone for our speakers in a large meeting room, the Wifi signal was inconsistent, the in-room safe was not useable and our room key gave us trouble the whole week! However, it is quite convenient to the planned events and most of the staff were wonderful!

This course was a wonderful learning experience!

This was my 2nd RS program and I enjoyed it immensely.

Every single leacturer was a wealth of information and very charming to boot. I do agree, however, that at times the lectures were too long (over 2 hours in one case!) and badly needed some multimedia (the speakers simply droned on and on and on with no visual aids, hanouts, or audience participation). Hotel was comfortable. I would have appreciated a shuttle from hotel to town. Food was good but few low cal options.

Nice mix of free time and excursions. Really enjoyed the live performances where presenters enacted the role of someone living in Williamsburg in colonial times. Debbie Downs gave a thrilling performance (she is a fantastic singer) about African-American storytelling and music.

There is a fair amount of walking on this trip but nothing overly strenuous.

If you enjoy early American history, this is the trip for you!

In all respects this was a very interesting, well organized and extremely very informative program covering an critical stage in the history of this country.

Just completed the most recent program, which was also my first Road Scholar program. Very much enjoyed it and would highly recommend it. Good mix of lectures and tours. The speakers were all very well versed in their area.
