This was absolutely the best of two worlds. One is a journey from the geological aspect and the other an adventure from the photography aspect. The guides were fabulous - they were very familiar with the area and how to allow us to become familiar with it, too, through the eye of the camera. The people in our group were fabulous. Even though we have been back for almost month, we still are challenged by each other (and our photography specialist, Lance) to continue to post pictures with one another where we live. We were even challenged to take pictures of the Blood Moon as we honed our skills and post them for one another to share. Thumbs up!!!!

If you love photography, this is the program for you! Utah offers some of the most breath-taking, magnificent vistas. Every park we visited had its own unique character and beauty. Our guides Eldon, Duke, Diane and Tami were so conscientious, caring and knowledgeable. Their enthusiasm and passion was most obvious and contagious. I can't begin to thank them enough for all their efforts in making this a most memorable experience. I returned from this trip enriched with photographic skills and geological knowledge thanks to the expertise of Eldon and Duke. This is definitely a program not to be missed!

Taking a guided trip with members and leaders who are expert and committed photographers really expanded my heretofore limited knowledge and experience. I learned about my camera, what to look for in taking pictures and was encouraged to view what I was seeing in a more expansive, more creative way. It was a delightful experience.

Despite the closure of the National Parks, the Road Scholar staff did an excellent job of assembling an alternate itinerary that included many excellent photo opportunities: Snow Canyon State Park near St George; Kolob Terrace in Zion (yes the road was open to provide access to private property owners in that area of the park); Cedar Breaks National Monument; Red Canyon near Bryce; Chimney Rock and Notom Road Hoodoos near Capitol Reef; Goblin Valley State Park and Wild Horse Slot Canyon near the San Rafael Swell on the way to Green River; and the Moab Man and Highway 279 petroglyphs and the Wilson and Jug Handle Arches near Moab. The last day of the tour began with a memorable sunrise photo shoot of Canyonlands from Dead Horse Point State Park. We enjoyed the company of our fellow participants on this adventure. Each of them contributed to the overall enjoyment of the tour. The photography instructors, Duke and Eldon, were excellent and I learned a lot from them. Eldon also taught us a lot about the geology of the areas that we visited. Our tour leader, Diane, was more than competent and guided us through various changes to the itinerary with such grace. And finally, our bus driver, Freddie, was a riot! We plan to take this tour again to see the national parks that we missed and to continue to improve our photography skills. If you are looking for a tour that combines excellent photography instruction with incredibly beautiful scenery, I highly recommend this one!

Due to government shutdown, we were not able to visit the National Parks, but the instructors of the trip knew the area and were able to take us to lots of features that were like the parks. I received a wealth of knowledge about landscape photography, the use of my camera, and the geology of Utah. Thank you to the leaders for a their great effort to make this trip unique and beautiful in spite of the circumstances.

I just returned from a photography class that started and ended in St. George, Utah. The original trip was to include Zion, Bryce, Capitol Reef, Canyonlands and Arches N.P.'s., but because of congress' inaction several "plan B's" took place with many state parks instead. This turned out to be several pleasant surprises. Of the 22 original participants, only two backed out (their loss). The class was about evenly divided between men and women and about half had DSLR cameras with the rest using point-and-shoots and smartphones (some also used tablets and iPads). Not all were retired and all were from the East or West coast except for one from Albuquerque and a pair from Arkansas. It was a good mix of very friendly people who helped each other a lot. The 2 instructors were both professional photographers with one also being a Geology professor. They stressed the use of Lightroom to process the images afterwards - good info here. We had many sunrise and sunset opportunities as well as an impromptu macro lesson. The elevation ranged from 3800ft to 10,400ft and some hiking was labored because of it. They really worked hard every night to ensure we had something worthwhile to see the next day. Some sites included several petroglyphs locations, a slot canyon and Goblin Valley State Park (a very interesting place).
