The reason I wanted to go to Istanbul is because it is the only city in the world that is half in Europe and half in Asia. We had done our homework, read the books, rented the DVDs, bought the Rick Steve's guidebook. Road Scholar was the only tour company that offered 8 full days there. What a good choice! Our hotel was next door to the Pera Palace, one block away from Istiklal Avenue! Our tour guide, Sami was wonderful. He was very knowledgeable about the city, its history, its people, its culture. He could name people and dates and facts and years just as well as the two college professors who gave us outstanding lectures. Our driver was amazing also. The pacing was exactly right. We were tired at the end of a day, but not totally exhausted. I went to all the "extras" I'd wanted to do: took a Turkish bath and had High Tea at the Pera Palace. I never felt afraid. There were tons of people there but they did not harass you. I was surprised at the excellent air quality despite the amount of traffic. After Paris, London, Rome and New York, I would recommend Istanbul as the next to visit! And I would recommend Road Scholar as the tour provider.

This was a trip of a lifetime! Our guide Sami was tremendous! We hit all the best sites and Sami gave us in-depth insight into it all. We were able to ask questions about modern Istanbul to our heart's delight. Our small group was an absolute delight to travel with! All the basic needs were taken care of by Road Scholar so that all we had to do was relax and enjoy the trip! We could have stayed another month! Thank you Road Scholar, Sami and our travel companions for making this trip so very fine!

A wonderful trip that helped my place Turkey in ancient and modern history. Names and places that were just words, now have context and meaning.

This program was especially well-organized and our leader, Sami, was wonderful. The hotel and meals were outstanding. I learned a lot about Turkey's history and architecture. Today Turkey is a leader in the region and its future is important as an example of a secular Muslim society. Our visit was just before the national elections, giving us insights into the politics. Most tours spend only a day or two in Istanbul but this magnificent city still leaves much to explore even after a week-long visit.

Don't miss this magic carpet ride to exotic Istanbul! Your days will be packed with visits to museums and mosques, and you will try foods made from recipes of the sultans' kitchens. My only regret is that the tour ended way too soon!

This program gives you so much insight into Istanbul's past that its evolving politics of today becomes more transparent and comprehensible. Our guide, Sammy, was expert and took very good care of each one's individual needs along the way whether it be were to go for the best Turkish Bath to where to shop for scarves or how to get to Pamuk's Museum of Innocent Things. The food was remarkably delicious and the activity level was truly challenging for me with uphills and steps but worth every step of the way to mosques, museums and palaces.

I share the enthusiasm about this program already expressed by others: it was terrific! It's not easy to capture the depth and breadth of Istanbul past and present in just a week, but our wonderful guide did so. I particularly valued the openness with which we discussed contemporary political and cultural issues. A fascinating and wonderful experience!

This was a fabulous program with an equally fabulous tour guide. Istanbul is a vibrant, cosmopolitan city, very clean, very safe, and very exciting.
