This was my tenth Road Scholar trip, and it was very interesting. Have been to Provence, Cuba, Greece and Turkey, Scandanavia, hiking Cotswalds & Cornwall with Road Scholar as well as several domestic trips. They generally do a good job. The Amelia Hotel at the Beach had very friendly staff, and Sliders, the restaurant across the road, was a fun place to hang out. The bar over there is pretty lively! Good thing that Sliders, the Restaurant was there, because the food on this trip was really skimpy and baaaaad. Sunday's dinner of goulash at Morning Glory was awful, I could not eat it and had 2 delicious salads instead. Lunch at Pate Sucre was pathetic: skimpy little 1/4 C of tuna salad on a bed of spinach. Espana was just OK, but we ate dinner at 5 PM, so early. Why? Overall, the history and walking and exploring were great, Brenda was good leader and cared about everyone. Dinner times were just too early and the food was way below my standards. P.S. Am a petite 120-pounder, and exercise a lot, so when I say the food was skimpy, it was. Enjoyed Sliders across the road and walking the beach every morning! Would recommend the trip, but warn them to bring energy bars, almonds, other snacks and walk to Publix to get some apples and fresh fruit. Happy travels everyone - am off to hike the Loire and Dordogne Valleys with Road Scholar in May! ---Mary Lynn Vickers

Our experience of Amelia Island was wonderful and full of passionate instructors that really love what they are talking about. One gets a real feel for what life is on a southern coastal island, complete with wonderful exposure to local restaurants, museums, history and the waterways that surround this island. You step back in time, wander through the past to the present with walking tours, seeing Fort Clinch and wandering around Kingsley plantation. The weather may not always be perfect but the presentations more than make up for that.

This was our 17th Elder Hostel/Road Scholar trip. If it had been our first, it would have been our last. The hotel was changed on us AFTER we had paid for the program, and we were moved out of town and beyond walking distance to the town. The meals were below par compared to our prior programs. We were asked to select EVERY meal upon arrival for the entire week. The meal selections were redundant and very limited. There really wasn't enough to do and see for an entire 5 day program. There were no evening activities, as in past programs, and being out of town we weren't able to walk about in the evening like we would have been able to do if we were in the originally promised hotel in town. A round trip taxi service to and from town was $20 plus tip.

I just completed my first Road Scholar program #20278 (Amelia, Beautiful and Historic Isle of Eight Flags) and anyone interested in history would appreciate it and the part it played in formation of the state of Florida. I enjoyed the program and plan to do many more in the years to come in other parts of the US.

The Amelia Island program was a very interesting look into a piece of American history.

Everything about this program is delightful. I loved learning about the unique and important place Amelia Island holds in the history of the U.S.. The museum in which the "classroom" presentations were held is outstanding. The field trips and walking tours were great. The hotel and restaurants were all well-located and gave fine servive. The program leader is experienced; the schedule for the week ran on time and without logistical problems. She is not only capable, but also very nice and lots of fun. Even though I came to Florida from up North in January during an unusually cold and rainy week on Amelia Island (no sun at all,) I loved the program and recommend it highly.
