Easy
For people looking to exercise their minds more than their bodies. There’s minimal walking and not too many stairs.
Moderate
These programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
Active
For people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately Challenging
For hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
Challenging
Get ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.

The objective of the program is to discover the exhilaration of riding on scenic country roads in the Blue Ridge escarpment, not necessarily to cover x number of miles on a bicycle. By studying cue sheets and routes in advance, each rider can determine which segments of a given day’s route he or she feels capable of riding. A sustained, uphill climb can be a sought-after challenge, or it can be a daunting test of muscle power – the individual rider can make up his own mind and plan accordingly.

This program is rated "challenging" and, if you do the maximum ride of about 30 miles each day, it is indeed challenging. If the maximum is a little too challenging, it is convenient to do shorter rides and still be part of the group. The rides are on asphalt roads, suitable for hi-bred and road bikes. The program provides average-quality mountain bikes. If possible, bring your own bike. The problem (mentioned by a prior reviewer) of safely transporting the bikes has been solved by a redesigned trailer. There is almost no flat riding. One is either riding up or down hill. The turns along the routes are marked with spray painted arrows. Without cue sheets (which we didn't have until we asked for them), it is possible to get lost. The accommodations are comfortable. A big plus of the Youth Learning Center, where we stayed, is the go-cart track. We had a blast racing each other one evening. The other evening activities were typical of Road Scholar -- moderately interesting. The food is average. Greg, the Road Scholar leader, was very attuned to what the participants wanted to do. After concern was expressed about riding on roads with too much traffic, he came up with different routes. This was a lot of work on his part as it required him to mark the new routes before breakfast. Greg and Georganne and JB, the Road Scholar coordinators, were outstanding. This was only the second time they had presented this program and there was very little tweaking left to be done. My husband and I participated in this program in October 2012. We enjoyed the week and if we happen to be in the area again, would consider repeating the program.

When we first read the description of this program, we could not understand how bicycling 17 – 25 miles per day could be “moderately strenuous”. At the group meeting at the end of the program, we all agreed that both the mileage and the moderately strenuous rating were correct. The fifteen participants’ biking experience ranged from casual around town riding to riding 150 miles in a day. The routes were over scenic, lightly travelled roads, that allowed fun filled descents followed by long climbs. The guides did a great job of making sure we never got lost. There was a staff member waiting at every corner showing everyone where to turn. This was a fun and energetic week of cycling.
Unfortunately there were some problems with the way the trip was run. Every day the bikes were transported on a trailer, and the staff did not have a good way of securing the bikes on the trailer. One day, one of the loaner bikes came off the trailer and was damaged. Both of our personal bikes were damaged. The paint was badly scratched on my wife’s bike, and the brake levers were broken on my bike. This was the first time Clemson ran this trip, so I am sure they will improve the way they secure the bikes on successive trips. The food was also of poor quality. For the first evening meal we had a thin processed chicken patty, instant mashed potatoes, and canned green beans. The meals did not improve on following nights. At least they had a decent salad bar available to supplement the canned vegetables. To be honest, I have little hope they will improve the food. They are used to serving children at this facility, and I don’t think they have the capability of preparing fresh food.
