This was a great trip! Seeing and learning about pueblo culture in this part of the country is something I've wanted to do for a long time. This Road Scholar trip was the perfect way for a single traveler like me to do that. The program and its leaders were great; ditto my fellow travelers.

Vern and Ruth from Miami tour 4541 4/28-5/4/2013 We thoroughly enjoyed our Pueblo Heritage Tour. It exceeded our expectations. We learned so much, our lives were enriched. The guides were so competent and informative, professional as well as caring. Our lectures by locals were most informative and warmed our hearts to the native cultures and history. Our accommodations and meals were above average. This was our first Road Scholar adventure, and we anticipate booking our next tour

As we were driving home after this excellent program, and I was reading aloud Lynda's review to my husband, what should come on the radio but The Eagles' "Take It Easy" (Standing on a corner in Winslow, Arizona...) Just the day before we had been at that corner. Our coordinators for this trip, Stewart and Dave, took every opportunity to share interesting historical, cultural, geological and botanical facts with us. The local speakers offered new or different perspectives. It helped to read some of the suggested books prior to the trip as there was a lot of information presented. We learned that when studying Indian history there is often more than one opinion about how and why things happened. This was my first Road Scholar program, and it exceeded all my expectations. The accommodations were comfortable, the meals were varied and more than adequate. We were treated very well everywhere we went. I will definitely go on more Road Scholar programs, and will focus in particular on NAU and small group programs, as this one was excellent in every way.

Although I have attended many programs, this was my first “traveling” program. We traveled by van from Flagstaff, AZ to Canyon de Chelly and on to Gallup, NM. We spent two nights at each place. There were stops at various points of interest along the way. The Coordinator, Stewart Lasseter, and his assistant, Dave Hall gave us a wonderful program. They shared their knowledge and experience not only on the Pueblo culture but also on the geology of the area. All the classroom speakers were interesting and well prepared for their presentations. Visiting the Old Oriabi village on the Hopi Reservation was one of the highlights of the program. It is the oldest continuous inhabited pueblo. In addition, being invited into the home of one of the residents for a pottery demonstration was an added treat. Chaco Canyon is truly remarkable and a “mystery of the past.” The skill and craftsmanship of the builders is still evident from the ruins of the various pueblos.

Stewart and Dave, the program coordinations were excellent in every way. We were lucky with great weather and the group was friendly and welcoming. Everyone had a great time together. Stewart, especially had knowledge that was above and beyond expectations. I would highly recommend this trip to anyone interested in indian history or wanting to learn about an American experience.

Visiting the Hopi Mesas, beautiful Canyon de Chelly, and fascinating Chaco Canyon - and receiving a warm welcome everywhere we went - were priceless experiences. Some of the brief stops along the way were delightful surprises too - small museums and the El Rancho Hotel lobby in Gallup among them!

A great program and my fellow participants made a nice, friendly group. I enjoyed the places we went, the information we received, and getting to know some interesting people. I greatly enjoyed getting to know a bit more about the people who lived (and still do) in the area and seeing how and where they lived.

Outstanding program with a nice mixture of outdoor activities and lectures. Providing us with insights into contemporary lives of the Hopi and Navajo while going back in time to the Chaco culture.

A really wonderful introduction to the richness of the Hopi and Navaho cultures, with their emphasis on the connection between the natural and spiritual world, and to the earlier inhabitants who built such remarkably complex structures without the tools or building materials that are common today, but who left a spiritual legacy still valued by modern descendants.

This is a great program. If you know a lot about the subject matter, you should still go. If you know a little but not a lot about the subject matter, you need to go. If you know nothing about the subject matter, you really need to go!

Pueblo Heritage - If you are the slightest bit interested in the history of the Hopi and Navajo Indians on this continent, this is the program for you. You will meet wonderful representatives of the tribes, and exciting academics. And you'll have the opportunity to walk the canyons with experts. The architectur of Chaco Canyon will leave you amazed and impressed: nothing as high or as complex was created in the US until the late 1800's.

This program focuses on four different Indian cultures in AZ and NM and provides glimpses of today's life along with the fascinating pre-history architectural remains. The field trips are outstanding but our lecturers varied from focused and informative to a bit rambling and disorganized. This is a fast-paced program with very long, full days since a lot of miles are covered over the six days. It is likely that if my husband and I had not done this program, we would not have seen Chaco Canyon or Canyon de Chelly. Getting to Chaco Canyon involves driving on a 20 mile, rutted dirt road. The Indian-guided Canyon de Chelly tour sitting high in seats on the back of a large truck was equally bumpy at times. Those with severe back problems should take this into account. The hotel stays were above average and the food very adequate. With the fantastic scenery and extraordinary ruins, we were glad we did this program.
