Amazing opportunity to look inside a unique American culture while putting your talents to good use. This RS program was my first, but not my last. It was also my first Service learning, which made me feel even better.

This was a memorable, fascinating experience. The Tuba City Boarding School was wonderful: facilities, staff, students, everything.

Just finished my 8th year of tutoring - the last 5 have been at Dzil Libei - and I think it was the best week yet! I worked with the exceptional first grade teacher and the great students in her class. Staying at Cameron Trading post is always a treat because the rooms are spacious, the staff members are always pleasant and the food is great. Our coordinator, Rosie Horsen, is very experienced in working with us and with the school faculty. She's approachable and a lot of fun. Not to be forgotten is Louise Bedoni, the school secretary, who keeps everything running smoothly and who is always ready to lend a suggestion or a helping hand to us. Am I coming back? You betcha!

I loved this program from start to finish. The transportation service (Van Go) was great -- very reliable and the driver was friendly and helpful. Our group leader, Rosie, was terrific -- full of information and she was also very supportive to the individual needs of the group. My assignment at the Tuba Boarding School was very enjoyable and challenging (in a good way). I learned a lot about Native American culture in the best way -- by meeting and interacting with the people. Our accommodations were excellent; the rooms were very nice and the food was great, as well as the wait staff. Also I really enjoyed shopping at the Trading Post. I have only one suggestion. In the future you might want to advise participants to bring postal stamps with them. I had wanted to send postcards, but we always left the Trading Post before the Post Office opened and returned after it was closed. I highly recommend this program!!

This is a fabulous opportunity to engage with delightful children and their teachers from the Navajo culture. I came to volunteer and left with a gift of learning that I will treasure. Rosie is a wonderful leader and role model.

In considering a service program at a school, in my honest opinion, you should think of whether you have an educational background, or can fall into a specific task. Otherwise, you may be at a loss.

A great first-time experience, mine in in the 5th grade class of Ms. Reid at Dzil Libei Elementary whose students are diligently grappling with the new demands of national Common Core math and language arts. They are wonderful kids -- hospitable, curious and as kind to stranger Anglo "elders" as to one another. I learned much more than I "taught" and I remember Ms. Reid and every one of her students with admiration and affection. There are more program "veterans" than newcomers and consequently there are some proprietary turf wars which could be avoided with a better proportion of Road Scholars who are new to the experience. Students enjoyed all the adult presentations, but the several art experiences seemed to me like rain in the desert, as there is no formal art or music in the curriculum and the kids are imaginative and creative people. I hope the program emphasizes helping the teacher and working with the students over extravaganzas produced by the visitors. Coordinator Rosie Horsen was always present, good-natured and helpful and she herself provided a window on Navajo life and culture which I really appreciated.

Just completed my 7th year of this program and am never disappointed with the opportunities to assist teachers and students. This time I was assigned to kindergarten and thought it was a blast! I brought a presentation, as I do most years. This year was a quick overview of the Lewis & Clark expedition and included 10 samples of furs from animals that the Corps of Discovery encountered. The kids and teachers loved touching/ holding the pieces. Assisting at Dzil Libei School is a rewarding experience that I recommend for anyone who can be flexible in this cultural setting.
