Easy
For people looking to exercise their minds more than their bodies. There’s minimal walking and not too many stairs.
Moderate
These programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
Active
For people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately Challenging
For hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
Challenging
Get ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.

Carol from Boston MA Number of programs attended: 2 Date attended: 3/03/13 - 3/09/13 My first Road Scholar program was a very rewarding experience. I spent a short week with a group of second graders at Tuba City Boarding School, working in tandem with their teacher and several of the students who seemed to benefit from extra attention. The school is very impressively outfitted with updated technology and gifted teachers. I plan to continue my contact with the class from afar by providing some supplies as they embark on a gardening project. Very much hope to participate again next year.

THIS YEAR I VOLUNTEERED AT DZIL LIBEI (GRAY MOUNTAIN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL.).COMPARED TO LAST YEAR, THE SCHOOL IS TOTALLY DISORGANIZED DUE TO MASSIVE TEACHER TURNOVER. MY SIXTH GRADERS HOWEVER, ARE SETTLING DOWN AND EAGER TO LEARN. MANY OF MY COVOLUNTEERS STATED THAT THEY WOULD NOT VOLUNTEER HERE AGAIN. THE SECOND SCHOOL I VOLUNTEERED AT WAS TUBA CITY BOARDING SCHOOL AND IT WAS A PLEASURE. MY COVOLUNTEERS ALSO LIKED THIS PROGRAM VERY MUCH. THE STUDENTS ARE DISCIPLINED AND THE TEACHERS WERE VERY GOOD. THE CAFETERIA FOOD WAS NOURISHING AND WELL BALANCED.THEY DO HAVE A GREEN HOUSE WHICH I DIDN'T GET TO SEE BUT MY COVOLUNTEER WAS RAVING ABOUT IT.I WOULD BE HAPPY TO VOLUNTEER HERE AGAI-AMITA

I think I've been adopted! I have volunteered many times on the reservation schools and finally realized that I can do more good by concentrating on one school. If you are there for a cheap vacation or running away from personal problems, this is not for you. These children need a lot of one on time and their teachers need a lot of help. The scenery is spectacular, the schools are welcoming and the children won't forget your help.

A wonderful experience. The children are so appreciative of our presence. Their smiles say it all.

As always, the week was a delight! We were warmly welcomed by the school principal and faculty, and both the students and I enjoyed working together in the classroom. I took along materials to do a power point presentation about native children of the arctic and about the Iditarod. It was enthusiastically received by faculty and students. Cameron Trading Post accommodations were very comfortable and meals weren't gourmet but were very nourishing and tasty. I just can't say enough good about the coordinator, Rosie Horsen. She's the most organized and approachable of all the Road Scholar program coordinators I've met. I will say that there were two people in our group who came with expectations that were not possible to be met. If each participant arrives without an agenda and with the desire to be flexible and to give, he/she can go home knowing that children's lives have been impacted by the special relationships between the tutor and the students.

For those adventurous and versatile folks who seek to help young Navajo students experience the challenging adventures of learning and to keep on learning and challenging themselves, too ...try it!

Those who travel from the East coast must plan to stay and pay for an extra day before and after the trip. The hotel in Phoenix offers bkfst. only and is located far away from restaurants although a pricey Chinese place is nearby.
In my case the teacher to whom I was assigned was neither prepared nor interested in using my abilities. However, this did not apply to everyone in my group.
The food was adequate...bland, tepid and boring.
An orientation would be a welcome addition to this program.
