This isn't a program for serious, or even moderately serious hikers. The setting is beautiful but only two of the four activity days were focused on hiking with the first day's hikes consisting of two fairly easy hikes of two miles each. The other hiking day had a barely moderate level hike of five and a half miles. The other two days included sightseeing activities -- museums, exhibits, and a research lab. All interesting but not what I'd expect on a hiking program. Evening presentations were very good -- interesting and appropriate to activities. The hotel/conference center provided adequate lodging and the sort of average meals you'd expect from a hotel cafeteria buffet line. Leader Lee provided endless information on the natural and cultural history of the Great Smoky Mountains and surrounding areas as well as wonderful music. Logistics were smooth and without glitches. Appropriate adjustments were made for weather conditions. The hotel was a significant distance from the park so there were daily long van rides into and back out of the park. As always, fellow participants were a highlight of the trip.
