This is the gold standard of programs, with its leader, Isabel, against which other programs will be measured.

You must see Baja and the beautiful Pacific Coast with Isabel. Be prepared for chilly weather meaning warm jackets and night clothes but also hot tropical days as you reach the south. The desert is magnificent. The whales are spectacular. Distance travelled is long but entirely worth it.

If you are looking for luxury this is not your trip. If however, you love the Mexican culture and way of life you will absolutely love it. Especially if Isabel Sanchez is your guide.

This was a great learning experience and fulfulled a life dream. We had two lectures to begin the program by Graham who walked top to bottom Baja and Norma who gave us wonderful information about Tijana. I had read Graham's book prior to the trip. Touching the whales was an amazing experience. We saw more than twelve dolphins playing on another boat trip. The desert was so much different than any desert I've seen it the States. We spent lots of time driving on the bus. It's a long distance from Tijana to Cabo. The bus driver, Juan, and guide, Isabel, were the best. Isabel had knowledge in many areas and good personal skills. There was lots of food. Sometimes we had irregular time when meals came due to distance but I found it acceptable. If you've ever wanted to do this you won't regret it.

This trip was rather amazing! Traveling over 1000 miles is grueling, but the only way to see this unique and captivating land with its remote villages and friendly people The whale-bonding and snorkeling with (baby) sea lions was a highlight. Our guide, Isabel, was superb, knew everything, was unflappable, nurturing and lots of fun. Driver Juan was excellent and Juan,(the Finder), was a great support to everyone. However, this group shouldn't be more than 20, with a smaller bus as well. As it is now, many of the small stops are overwhelmed and the entire trip is slowed down. I would also suggest a second day in San Ignacio as three one-night stays in a row is pretty stressful. (perhaps skip the second day in San Diego).

Instead, I express my dissatisfaction with your qustionnaire. In some cases, too general; in others, too detailed. Many references to circumstances too incidental that occurred too long ago to be clearly remembered.

I totally enjoyed this program on Baja. However, people who think they would enjoy this program need to read about the program and Baja because it is a very intense experience not for the timid.

I just enjoyed the Baja CA From Tip to Toe program in late January; Isabel is an excellent tour guide/leader, assisted by her helpful son Ivan -- so nice to have a young person on the trip. The places we saw and stayed at were fabulous, as was the food. The old Missions, grey whale watching [I patted a baby whale next to the boat!], lovely small towns, ocean views, etc., making a tortilla filled with fresh goat cheese, etc. made for an enjoyable trip. We returned from this program last week and give it a very high rating. My husband and I were 2 of only 13 very compatible guests and the travel was on a full size bus, giving us lots of room to spread out. Isabel, our guide, was amazing..well organized, knowledgeable and fun to be with. The logistics were terrific. Meals were ordered and called ahead to maximize our time. The hotels varied from luxurious to basic as Road Scholar had led us to understand. Several of them did not have heat, so they were kind enough to bring in a space heater when requested. The only negative was that it rained on whale watching day, but that did not spoil our awe.

I loved everything about our trip in Baja. Isabel is fabulous--totally on top of everything in such a pleasant and friendly manner. Thomas is an excellent bird guide--tried very hard to meet all our diverse needs. Food was good and hotels ranged from very nice to lovely. I enjoyed the 2 boat rides even though it was cold.

We enrolled in this program because we were interested in Baja California and also wanted to bask in warmer temperatures than our frigid Province in Canada could give us. We were not birders but were interested in it. It turned out that the weather from San Diego down to La Paz was warmer than at home, but still cold for the time of year. Thomas proved himself an enthusiastic bird leader, discovering new birds wherever we ventured. He went the proverbial extra mile. About Thomas one of the participants told us that he was the best of five birding trips he had been on. Isobel was a fantastic tour manager, able to solve any problem that was thrown her way, and always good-humored and effective. We generally liked the sight-seeing (we particularly enjoyed Todos Santos with all its galleries),two boat trips, and the lectures and being introduced to birding, which was new to us. The hotels were generally fine and we liked the food in Mexican restaurants most of the time, though the San Diego dinners were not great. The weather during the last days of the trip finally got us to remove most of the layers of clothing we had needed before and the two extra days we stayed in San Jose’s Tropicana Inn made us forget that Baja California can be unseasonably cold.

Excellent program. Isabel did a superb job organizing and re-organizing when the schedule changed. She did a good job of keeping us[me] in line. Thomas also did a superb job ferreting out almost 200 birds including the endemics. Would recommend it highly

Nineteen people on a huge bus! At least it wasn’t 36! Nineteen is too big for a birding group; I hear that Road Scholar is reducing the group size to 12 or 14 in the future, good! Plus instead of a big bus that can’t go everywhere, two vans would be better. There was a great variety of ability in the group, expert long time birders who were looking for the three promised endemics; others of no birding experience and some intermediates. Tom Meyers is excellent in spotting and hearing the birds, good at identification, but lacking some skills in leadership. He sometimes was way ahead of the group and didn’t seem to pay attention to the frustrations of those that were there for the endemics. It was hard to understand that they were only at the bottom of the peninsula. Isobel was terrific! She was always cheerful, helpful and unflappable when things didn’t come about as planned. (Why wasn’t there a bio of her in the brochure??) The lodgings were from fantastic to tired, but all clean and safe. The food was limited to the choices available through the program. It was okay, but hot and spicy is not my favorite, fortunately there were alternatives and the vegetarians were taken care of. The margaritas were great. The weather! Well there was an Arctic cold front that went way down the peninsula which meant that none of us got to wear shorts til Cabo! It was COLD! Some days had mixed sun and clouds, some no sun a few all sun, nothing you can do about that though. An interesting program, but the picture of people patting the grey whales is misleading, they weren’t there yet! And it was one of primary reasons for taking this trip. However, I did get the three endemics plus one, so not a total loss.

Overall, the trip was very informative and entertaining. The weather did not cooperate as it was cold and rainy part of the time. The bird man was very good except he had long legs and was way ahead of me most of the time. Accommodations and food was good with lots of variety. The trip to the island from LaPaz was not good, bad weather and nothing to do with the weather. Recommend an alternate trip or more birding. I recommend this trip to anyone interested in Mexico or birding or both.
