Brilliant blue skies, dazzling sunlight, Mediterranean climate, Cezanne’s Mont Sainte-Victorie overlooking Aix-en-Provence, olive groves, wineries, centuries old monasteries, castles, chateaus, and palaces combine to weave a rich Road Scholar tapestry. This in-depth moderately paced program is packed with a wide array of interesting and engaging activities from the life and art of Cezanne to quaint and historic towns and villages with local history rooted in Roman civilization (replete with ruins as well as still used Roman amphitheater). Museums, cathedrals, music, culture and of course, delicious and artistically presented French food will appeal to the adventuresome traveler. This program has something for everyone, from the Alpilles mountain range in Southern France to the Camargue, the delta of the Rhone River, flush with wildlife and waterfowl plus pink flamingos, unique Camargue white horses, and prized black bulls. Our trip was enhanced by the superb leadership of Penny Old whose depth of understanding of the local area and whose ability to manage a group ensured that our experience was exceptionally valuable. The sun shines brightly on The Art of Living in Provence.

The assistance provided in scheduling air travel was invaluable. The welcome at the arrival airport was very good and relieved any anxiety about getting to the hotel. A good value. The Guide / Leader was, in a word: Outstanding!

It goes without saying that Provence is a wonderful place to learn something about the art of living. How we remember this adventure is colored by the company we kept. We could not have asked for a better group for leisurely dining and discovering the area. The guides were more than knowledgeable; they had passion and enthusiasm for their topics. And Penny was just fabulous as a leader with her combination of quirky humor, organization.and attention to our needs.

This was our first Road Scholar tour and it was not a disappointment. The educational offerings and the sites visited were excellent. We especially enjoyed the dinner w/ the local professionals, the wine tasting, and the traditional Provençal musical performance. We had a great tour leader and a very compatible group.

Road Scholar's program, The Art of Living, was a delightful and educational experience. Fellow travelers were friendly and congenial. Tour escort and local guides were knowledgeable, professional, warm and friendly. Sightseeing involved much walking on inclined, cobblestone streets. Weather was great. Hotels, restaurants/cafes, served delicious meals with unlimited wines. Program presenters were top notch. Beautiful countryside, interesting historical places to visit. Friendly and helpful locals. Air, hotels, most meals, tips and gratuities included. Great value for the price. My trip was over much too soon!

The people on the the trip were just lovely, the guides knowledgeable, the hotel accommodations were just fine. I thought the food for some of the lunches and dinners was just okay. It was our first tour and was extremely well-organized.

This was a great trip, perhaps my best European vacation ever. I particularly enjoyed our tour leader, Penny Old, and Pamela Morton, our guide for much of the Aix part of the trip. They were helpful, knowledgeable, warm and engaging. A highlight of the trip was the last dinner, in Avignon, and visiting with the chef about how he created such a wonderful meal. Spending time in Provence has been at the top of my bucket list for some time and I can't imagine any tour would have been better than this Rhode Scholar presentation.

This was a really enjoyable trip. Our tour leader, Penny Old, was delightful and knowledgeable. For this foodie, the cheeses, wine and meals were incredible, especially the lunch at the ranch in Camarque. Luckily the walking outpaced the food intake. And as an artist I really appreciated visiting the landscapes where Cezanne, Gauguin and Van Gogh painted (and to stay across from "Tavern at Night, Arles") near Arles and St. Remy. The family dinner, the Arles Museum of History and the white horse, black bulls (little castrati) and pink flamingoes were also highlights. I would wish for a future trip to see the collection inside the outstanding modern building of the History of Provence Museum in Marseille. Definitely recommend.

I really enjoyed this program and would love to return to other areas of Provence. Our tour leader Penny was one of the best. Knowledgeable, helpful, with a great sense of humor. Although not as convenient as Marriotts, hotels were authentically French and a lot more memorable. Food was very good. Many highlights including some gorgeous scenery and the Mediterranean coast. Visiting a French family was a real plus. Weather was warmer than expected, so bring some light clothes and then layer up. Would recommend.

This was an excellent program made so not only by the itinerary but also by Penny Old our tour guide. I liked only staying in two hotels. It makes traveling so much easier and pleasurable.

I agree with everything that Harry said about this trip. This was the best food I have ever had on a Road Scholar trip and our meals were never rushed. Aside from being delicious, the food was so artistically presented. The Festival in Arles was a problem for 2 nights of almost no sleep. But seeing the phenomenal horse show in the Colliseum might have been worth the sleepless nights. Penny, our tour leader, was brilliant in every way. Her knowledge, concern for all of us, and great wit make her my #1 guide. I hope I can do a Paris tour with her in the future. A wonderful group of people , the fascinating sights and excellent local guides made this a trip I will be talking about for a long time to come. And I got lucky.......my 2 Air France flights did not get cancelled!

Great trip: so well organized and planned out, wonderful experts, excellent hotels, food and wine. We did a lot, but the trip was so well planned that we never felt "over-worked." One unfortunate event was a big festival in Arles during our time there-something which perhaps Road Scholar could have re-scheduled, but the festival enabled us to see events not normally happening in that city, so the plus side worked out. Tour leader, Penny, was especially helpful with dietary and other needs, always with a sunny disposition, and on the spot when Air France went on strike to find us alternative travel and hotels if we were delayed. We would travel anywhere with Penny!

The Provence trip was my first "international" one with the Road Scholars and it will not be my last. It was simply wonderful and exceeded all my expectations. Seeing the flamingos and having dinner with a French family were among my treasured memories. I would highly recommend the trip.

In my opinion this program is unique in that it covers such a wide variety of the Provencal experience. It covers towns like Arles with its history and markets, mountain top villages, and a bull ranch. It covers time from the Greeks and Romans to 20th century Impressionists. The still mostly standing Roman arena has seat numbers painted on the stonebenches as it is still in use for French bull fighting and the remains of the Roman theatre is used for plays and rock concerts. We toured places familiar to Cezanne and Van Gogh and I wished I had looked at more pictures by them before I came. It also more leisurely than other RS tours I have been on so you have time to sit at a cafe and sip a drink while watching the world go by, a quintessential French situation. Also be prepared for long (2 hours)meals by American standards - that is also the French way. The wild west Camargue with bulls and horses also has flamingos. They are very skittish and flew off as we approached on the bus so you'll need a good telephoto lens or zoom feature on your camera to get good pictures. The tour leader and lecturers were excellent with Pam Morton who gave several lectures and city tours being exceptionally knowledgeable and engaging. Food was mostly good and hotels were in good locations very close to center of town. Most interesting trip.

A travel agent and/or tour packager can put together an interesting trip, but Road Scholar is uniquely differentiated in what they do. The word SCHOLAR is the key.
