If you love and appreciate the art of Impressionists such as Monet, Renoir, Van Gogh, Cezanne, Matisse and the artists who inspired them, this tour will be an indulgence. In addition to seeing the works they created, you'll visit the sites which inspired them- the limestone cliffs of Boudin's Normandy coast; the seas at Étretat that washed away a couple of Monet's artworks and almost the artist himself; the natural light of the Côte d"Azur that captured the imagination of Cezanne, Matisse and others. Visit where Van Gogh lived including the asylum of St. Paul de Mausole where he created more than150 works of art. Then, there's the fabulous French food! A wonderful trip.

Paris, Normandy and Nice were all very interesting destinations. Arles was of less interest and the Best Western Hotel there was not up to the standard of the other accommodations. The food was the best of any RS trip I have taken. We had wonderful, informative guides, but perhaps fewer talks than we expected. Our trip leader was very flexible and was able to make changes to maximize our time, for example she graciously arranged a visit to the Matisse Chapel which was not on the itinerary. The trip was more tiring than I expected, we rarely had time to return to the hotel and rest during the day.

I forgot to add one thing about this trip. The Hotel du Forum in Arles was AWFUL and shouldn't be used again by Roads Scholar.

This is a great program for anyone with an interest in learning more about the impressionist and post-impressionist period of art development in France and a desire to travel in France to key locales where much of the art was created. Although the focus on the program was on the art and artists of this period, the inclusion of both bus and river tours in Paris, the concert at Sainte Chappelle, walking tours through Arles and Nice, and the winetasting at St. Paul en Vence added variety to the overall experience of the tour. Our group leader, Laura, did an excellent job of guiding us through this ambitious program.

Our tour director was very knowledgeable and brought clarity and interesting detail to the history, art, and places visited. Carol Gossett from Portland, OR

Now I really understand the point of view of the Impressionists and the Post Impressionists, after seeing their homes, studios, and locations in which they painted, I understand that "light" was the subject, and everyday life the topic.

Our leader was knowledgeable, entertaining, fun - and she was instrumental in the success of the trip. The experience of seeing and feeling the places where the impressionists walked, the landscapes, buildings they painted, their homes, brought a sense of intimacy to their work and lives. It opened a wonderful new world of impressionism for me.
The trip was terrific in every way!

The leader is what makes this program. She is well educated and informed. She adds the things that make the stories fun. This is a busy program and I came home tired but inspired. A must do!
