The program in both Padua and Venice was a wonderful blend of guidance by leaders, and lecturers and time to explore on one's own. The Group leader, Ellen Rossi, was as gracious, responsive, even tempered, and charming as you could expect anyone to be. Michela, her assistant, was lively and spirited. They worked together beautifully, and they were eager to make choices about places to visit and places to eat at which would bring us closer to experiencing Venice's contemporary daily life. Without them, the time in both cities would have been less vital and engaging. Going to Venice meant a great deal to me. I will not forget it's labyrinthine beauty, its offer of a fine vista at every turn. I was happy to be on the Dorsoduro. It has a lived-in peacefulness and charm that you don't find on the crowded streets around San Marco and all the designer boutiques there.
