I am still smiling when I think about the two Road Scholar trips I took to Italy in November 2015. Firstly, I took the Piedmont "Slow Cooking" tour which was a delight. I have travelled extensively in Italy but had never been to the Piedmont area. It is a jewel. The landscapes, the vineyards, the food, the people, the lectures, our group leader were superb. Secondly I went to Lecce in Puglia to join the Puglia, Basilicata and Calabria tour. Another incredible revelation was in store for me. I saw and learned so much. I was able to delve in layer after layer of history and culture. What a wealth of beauty. I would highly recommend both of these tours to future Road Scholar travelers.

Puglia, Basilicata & Calabria: Southern Italy from “Heel to Toe” was delightful and beautiful. We experienced new adventures every day: strolling through Alberobello, a trulli town, seeing incredible mosaics on a church floor, walking through the ancient rupestrian homes and churches of the Sassi, seeing Putin’s gift of a large statue of St. Nicolas, eating delicious pasta, lunching at a family home (lots of family members) as musicians played ancient instruments and a professional actress danced and sang flirtatious songs, visiting the Palmi’s House of Culture, Museum of Ethnography and Folk Tradition. Plus we learned a lot about olive groves, Puglia’s importance to trade and commerce, the particular Baroque style of architecture in Lecce, and on and on.

Visiting Southern Italy is unlike other Road Scholar trips. The villages and towns of the regions of Puglia, Basilicotta, and Calabria are old-world charming, and the people are friendly and proud of their towns and villages. Physically, the countryside, mountains, and seashore are breathtaking. It's a visit into an older civilization which is, at the same time, modern. It;s a wonderful experience.

I enjoyed our trip to Puglia, Basilicata and Reggio Calabria. The lectures and other information given on the history and cultures of the regions, both past and present, enhanced my understanding and appre-ciation of this region. There is a friendliness here not found in the crowded cities of central and northern Italy.

It was a very interesting trip, especially the sites visited. I think too much time was spent on lunches (when we would have benefited seeing more of a place, such as the botanical gardens in Reggio Calabria--instead we waited an hour for a 2-hour lunch), and the hotels went from very good (in Lecce) to miserable (in Calabria). in terms of cleanliness, food, and service.

I found the sites visited to be most interesting and off the beaten path.

I just returned from a Road Scholar Puglia and Calabria. From time to time I was conscious of how well-planned and thought out it was. The iteneray offered a variety of sites through the centuries. Yet the pace was not pressured and allowed time to enjoy the glorious food and real atmosphere of Italy. and atmosphere of Italy

The trip was great. Loved Calabria. Around every bend the landscape changed. Just got better and better. Our local guide was wonderful and informative bringing his own unique experiences to the tour. Plan to go back.

I thought every effort was made to give us an appreciation of the history, culture and landscape in depth. What with fabulous lunches featuring local dishes, incredible vistas of three seas, views of pre-historical sites, medieval villages and bustling metropolises of today, we were given an array of experiences. The guides in both Puglia and Calabria demonstrated their enthusiasm for and knowledge of these regions and the site coordinators made certain everything went off as scheduled and that we were always comfortable and safe.

The Puglia/Calabria experience was a rich one; rich in varied landscapes, three seas, olive and fig trees, grapevines, ancient history and culture, wondrous castles antique mosaic floors of great beauty. Alberobello, Matera and Gerace are straight out of ones dreams. Italy is famous for its great cuisine. I was happy to enjoy those many meals, all, but breakfast, with wine, some lasting hours. There were 21 fairly compatible people in the group; good hotels, knowledgeable, accommodating leaders, each of whom seemed very connected to his partcular part of Italy.

This was our first Road Scholar trip and we throughly enjoyed it. The group leader in Puglia was terrific, knowledgeable, organized and very informative. The meals were terrific, especially some of the lunches. In Calabria the group leader was good but not as able to communicate. What she lacked in her ability to speak English she made up for in her helpfulness and desire to share information. The last place that we stayed at in Reggio was not as good as the other accommodations and the meals at the place in Rende was not as good as most of the other meals. I would recommend this trip to anyone.

The Heel and Toe of Italy is by far the best tour I've taken, and I've taken many with many other tour companies. Road Scholar surpasses all of the others. This tour taken in Sept. 2014 was delightful from the first day to the last. The sites were gorgeous to look at and fastinating to learn about, the hotels were very clean and nice, the food was varied and delicious, and the guides were intelligent, kind, considerate, and enthusiastic. Their knowledge and their ability to impart that knowledge to us was truly impressive. They love their region and as a result I now love it also. I can't think of any reason at all that anyone would hesitate to make this tour their next adventure. I was concerned that I would be physically unable to enjoy the tour due to its "active" classification but the activities are seldom more than an hour to an hour and a half and the guides walk very slowly and keep watch so as to pace the tour for all of us to be able to enjoy it. They are wonderful guides and directors.
