This journey to see Japan's traditional highlights in a well-planned and interesting program is highly recommended. We loved the opportunity to watch craftsmen at work, visit markets, gardens, temples and historic neighborhoods. Our accommodations were comfortable and the educational discussions and events were outstanding. We found the DK guidebook Japan relevant and valuable, and our educator gave us helpful handouts for additional understanding.

Program is a tremendous tasting menu of all aspects of life in Japan including food, geography, art, crafts, market life assisted by our very capable guides and leaders including Michael McKenna, Yukio-san, and of course Takuya. While there are some changes 2015 vs 2014, I can highly recommend the program with an advisory to make time for Tokyo National Museum and Kyoto National Museum. If shopping, plan on doing so as you go as some items are only available locally. My attendance in October, 2014 feattured excellent weather as well, but always come with waterproofs!

As reviewers before me have said, this is a wonderful intro to a most interesting country. We learned a lot, saw a lot, ate a lot and walked a lot. It has whetted my appetite for a return visit.

We were also on the Oct 29th, 2013 program. Others have provided excellent reviews. I can only add that Japan has a unique culture and history. One should utilized the excellent suggested reading material to prepare for the trip to maximize your understanding of the culture and history while in Japan. I would recommend Totman's book and the DK Eyewitness Japan book.

I thought the trip was a stimulating and broadening experience. Japan is a very nice country -- very clean, the people very honest (I lost my iPhone and it was returned to me), varied in landscape and size of city/village, beautiful. Thank you to Kathleen Aoki and Naomi Addyman for their thoughtfulness, patience with us, knowledge, good planning. The hotels where we stayed were very nice, the food fantastic and varied. I would have liked to learn more about Japanese gardens, and ikebana.

I am still enjoying so many things that I learned about Japan as a place and as a culture. Thanks Kathleen and Naomi!

If Kathleen is the tour study leader it’s a must do trip. As she puts it, it’s Japan’s history and culture through stories and her experiences. Her enthusiasm is such, as we are treated to her commentary on our listening device (the greatest thing ever invented …thanks RS) that it is actually disappointing when she goes offline. Who else can get the group to get on hands and knees to peer at nails that allowed for “nightingale floors”? The provider, Walk Japan, does an excellent job in varying the type of Japanese cuisine offered at meals. Hotel sites are close to attractions and rooms are functional (already missing the high tech toilets). There were free afternoons for individual exploration at each major stop. Naomi, the other leader, handled the logistics end of the trip faultlessly. Thanks Walk Japan for having such capable individuals. Be prepared to walk as you cannot truly experience Japan on a bus. Stairs are plentiful and steps are irregular, especially at Matsumoto Castle (on purpose). Easily slip off footwear is convenient but make sure the footwear is comfortable for walking. Forks are available but develop your chopsticks skills. Embrace the vending machines as they are everywhere. Arigato Kathleen and Naomi

This program offers a great opportunity to learn about Japan's unique culture. The local organization (Walk Japan) supervising the program did an excellent job. The program was very well designed and administered with ample free time. The meals provided were great. Tour highlights were: 1. Tokyo (everything). 2. Matsumoto Castle. 3. Narai old post town. 4. Shirakawa-go village of thatched roof A-Fram farmhouses. 5. Kenroku-en gardens. 6, Kyoto's Golden Pavillion. Our Oct. 29-Nov. 13 trip was perfectly timed to see the beautiful fall colors in the gardens and in the Japan Alps. Above and beyond everything else were the incredible Japanese people. Their politeness and courtesy to strangers exceeds anything else that I have experienced over a lifetime of travel. If you have an interest in Japan, I don't believe that you could find a better designed itenerary or a better local staff to assist you. Our hats off to local guides Naomi and Kathleen for their excellent work on our behalf.
