It took this trip to show the new face of the southern Balkans and the wealth of the historical experience that they bring to their encounter with new Europe. And what archeological gems along the way!

This program provides a rich experience of a very important part of the world during ancient and modern times but remains an area that is only little visited and understood by Westerners.

Very successful tour with 14 other souls. Top tier guide. Entire 14 days delightful, interesting & informative. Just the right pace and amount of free time to explore or relax. This was my fourth Road Scholar tour.

A fascinating Balkan journey of orthodox churches, ancient paleolithic, Greek, and Roman ruins, including remnants of Alexander the Great, and stunning lakes and mountains.

This program was an excellent introduction to Macedonia, Bulgaria and a part of Greece that I had not visited. (I had been to Albania in 2000.) The Byzantine churches and monasteries were marvelous and the museums and Hellenistic tomb treasures knocked our socks off. Bulgaria was a complete surprise in the best sense - who knew that: 1)the Bulgarian mountains are gorgeous, 2) the Bulgarian world heritage sites are outstanding, and 3)the Bulgarian countryside is generally litter free! Also, another good thing about the trip was that the group size was only 18. I hope that Road Scholar does not increase the group size - it would make the trip much less attractive. Albania? Macedonia? Greece and Bulgaria? Before I traveled to these countries with Road Scholar I was unsure of where some of them were actually located on the map and I did not realize that Macedonia was a country of its own! Yet after spending two weeks touring The Western Balkans I felt as if I knew them quite well! Our merry band of travelers were incredibly friendly as well as knowledgeable in so many areas. We had great fun!

Bonnie from New York, NY Number of programs attended: 9

This is an excellent tour. Each country is unique, and each offers many diverse sites of interest. The food is outstanding! The individual guides for each country were very knowledgeable, and Dimiter (our leader) and guide for Bulgaria was so helpful, so available, and really expert in the history of his country. The group was particularly great--always on time, well-traveled, well-read, and very interested in all that was offered.
