This was our third RS tour, the first two being Cuba and India. All three were amazing! If you've ever had any curiosity about China, this is a wonderful introduction to the country and its culture. The food was delicious, the people were very friendly, and our guide, Mr. Liu, was THE BEST!!

This program was a once in a life time opportunity. I particularly liked that you get to see the cities, the villages, and the world renown tourist sights all in one trip. The tour guide Mei was exceptional!! I was concerned that the length of the trip might be too long, but the time and days flew by. The accommodations were far above my expectations. Adjusting to the local diet was challenging, but rewarding. If your bucket list has an adventure to China on it, this is the trip to take.

This program was excellent! We were given insights into the lives of the Chinese people that will last for a life time. We enjoyed visiting and learning about the historical sites that we had dreamed of seeing. They are breath taking! The talks by the national guide, professors and city guides were very educational. The visits with the students and in the homes of the Chinese people were enlightening. I would imagine all of the national guides have strengths, but our national guide,Mei, was the best we have ever had in out many travels. She gave excellent talks and was very flexible, very personable and an excellent problem solver. She had a way of making everyone feel that she was there for them.

This was a great trip! Mei our leader went out of her way to make sure that all of us were well taken care of. If you have asthma, sinus or allergy problems then make sure you pack your own medications. Invisible pollution was a problem for some of us. Please PACK LIGHT. I cannot emphasize enough, take only what you think you will need and then eliminate more. The hotels provide hairdryers and all the soap, shampoo etc. There is laundry service available, take advantage ot that and just budget for your needs ( for 2 we spent about $50 on laundry) it is well worth it not to have too many things to cart around. Participants are responsible for taking their own luggage to and from the train stations and airport. Porters will be arranged if possible, but remember there are long walks dragging luggage through train stations with at least one floor up or down each time. PACK LIGHT! This is a great trip, do not hesitate to sign up if you are at all interested, you will not regret it!

If you have ever wanted to see historic China or see the modern China that is being built, this is the program for you. The experience was comprehensive and the guide was wonderful. Just remember, seeing China like this is a very active experience; Road Scholar isn't kidding when they say it's an active adventure with lots and lots of stairs that cannot be avoided! We had fun, learned a great deal, ate wonderful food and came home with a totally new perspective on one of the major countries of the 21st century.

The reviews on this site that motivated me to do China By Train and Riverboat were spot on: it's the most phenomenal trip we've taken. There is no book or statistic that can prepare you for the reality of today's China. It changes your world view and that is the true value of this trip. That this trip is challenging goes with the territory. The program materials don't say how bad the pollution is, but believe me you will be shocked. If you have a respiratory illness as I do, you MUST take masks. The US State Dept has accurate air quality monitors in China but even better, excellent educational materials on what masks to choose. Follow their advice and you will do fine; I did. (Note: the program did offer masks; but based on State's advice I would not choose them.)

China by Train and Yangtze River Boat is an amazing, once in a life time experience that you will never forget. This is an opportunity to see and experience China as few others get a chance to do. Just be forewarned that the activity level is pretty challenging at times and includes many, many stairs without hand rails. Also, the 11 hour train ride to Kaili is an experience you will not forget...both good and not so good!
