See our Small Group programs.
EasyFor people looking to exercise their minds more than their bodies. There’s minimal walking and not too many stairs.
ModerateThese programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.

We took a chance and went in the rainy season and had a terrific time. The only issue we had with the rain is we never saw the top of Arenal Volcano - it was constantly covered in clowds. Our guides and driver were great, we saw beautiful flowers, birds, butterflys, frogs and scenery.

At Your Pace: The Natural Wonders of Costa Rica was a very well planned and well guided program. The diversity of locations within Costa Rica and the variety of activities made it very informative, interesing, and enjoyable. It was a great trip for those looking for a less strenuous experience, while still capturing all the delights of the country and its people.

What a wonderful trip! And what a beautiful country! I liked everything about this adventure - perfect mix of learning, seeing wonderful scenery, birds and animals, planned activities and free time. Well planned and structured and meticulously carried out. Our guides Erick Guzman and Tavo Ruiz were wonderful - very knowledgeable and helpful. I will definitely visit Costa Rica again.

A great trip. So many birds, animals of every description. A wonderful adventure from La Selva to Arenal, to the pacific coast. A special treat was visiting with locals in their homes and learning about their lives.

I visited Costa Rica on the 2/20/13-3/2/13. What a fantasic trip. Guides Eric Guzman and Tavo were very personable. The 14 people in our group got a long so well. Poison dart frogs, iguana, 3 toed sloth, birds, crocodiles, lizards, monkeys, giant anteater, and wild boar! Delicious food. Very interesting instructors. A trip to remember.

I rarely get the opportunity to travel out of the country, and have never been to Central America. The Costa Rica trip was absolutely a marvelous and life-affirming experience, especially for one as interested in seeing nature and thinking about social and environmental issues as I am. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Luis from Washington, DC Number of programs attended: 2

Although I had visited Costa Rica in the past, this program allowed me to discover a wonderful world and makes me want to return. Next time I'd like to visit a coffee plantation, to see the giant turtles, and perhaps to explore new areas.

This program was delightful. The pace was exactly right and the variety of activities and locales were all interesting and enjoyable. Travel organization was nearly flawless in all aspects so altogether this was a nearly perfect vacation experience.

We loved Costa Rica!

Practical advices: bring a flashlight. Not all trails between cabins and restaurants are well lit, and the markers with cabin numbers may be not lit at all. The locals use umbrellas for sun protection, there are no rains, only downpours – bring a rain poncho. An alarm clock may be a good idea. Good walking shoes with closed toes – and make sure the traction is good, as even some hotel rooms’ floors and walkways can be slippery. Rubber slippers for showers will be helpful as the wet tiles get slippery. Hotel locations are in remote areas – medicine, snacks, anything you need better bring from home. If you wear glasses, bring a spare pair – one man in our group lost a lens.

I understand that this was the first "At Your Pace" program developed by Road Scholar. I have become less able to keep with with group walks on Road Scholar programs and hoped that this would be a better fit for me. It turned out to be a perfect combination of limited walking requirements, a slower pace and interesting and informative field trips , lectures and activities.

I hope that Road Scholar will continue to develop "At Your Pace" level 2 programs. I think many of us less able folks would benefit greatly.
